ANAHEIM - J.A. Happ takes the mound opposite Jered Weaver on Monday night when the Toronto Blue Jays pay a visit to Angel Stadium to begin a three-game series. Happ has been solid since getting roughed up for seven runs in four innings at Cincinnati on June 21. He tossed 7 2/3 shutout frames against the Chicago White Sox while striking out eight in his next start. Most recently, Happ gave up four runs on six hits over seven innings while striking out four and walking nobody against Milwaukee on Wednesday. Weaver, after giving up just one earned run in each of his previous two starts, was tagged for five runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. Once again, the long ball hurt Weaver as he gave up two home runs to run his seasons total to 16 allowed. Prior to his last start, Weaver had gone 17 straight innings without giving up a homer. "I just left a couple pitches up, and those guys put it where they should," Weaver said. L.A. has won 10 straight at home and 15 of its last 16 overall at Angel Stadium. The Halos concluded a four-game home sweep of the Houston Astros following Sundays 6-1 victory. Starter Garrett Richards struck out a career-high 11 while pitching 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball to improve to 10-2 on the season. Kole Calhoun homered and went 3-for-3, while Albert Pujols was 2-for-3 including a two-run single. The Blue Jays are trying to avoid a season-worst fifth straight loss, although they will have to do so without All-Star slugger Edwin Encarnacion, who is expected to miss at least two weeks with a strained right quadriceps that he injured during Saturdays 5-1 loss at Oakland. Encarnacion is second in the majors in both home runs (26) and RBI (70). "It hurts us not having him on the team," said outfielder and fellow All-Star Jose Bautista. "The No. 1 priority is to get him better." Toronto, which leads the majors with 114 homers on the season, lost each game of a four-game set at Oakland as the offense went 0-for-20 with runners in scoring position. It was more of the same for the teams suddenly lackluster offense during Sundays 4-2 loss, which dropped the team two games behind Baltimore in the AL East standings. The Blue Jays held a one-game lead atop the division entering the series against the Athletics. "We got shut down big time," manager John Gibbons said. "Were just not very good right now. Were just not producing." The Angels won three of four when these teams met up at Rogers Centre from May 9-12. NEWARK, N.J. -- Carolina forward Patrick Dwyer and goalie Cam Ward didnt have time to think about what they were doing on the ice during the biggest moments of the game. Their instincts were good enough to carry the Hurricanes to victory. Dwyer scored a short-handed goal in the second period and Ward made a save while flat on his back in the waning seconds as the Hurricanes held on to defeat the New Jersey Devils 4-3 on Wednesday night. "I just raced down and sometimes its better in that situation because you dont think about what youre going to do," said Dwyer, whose backhand made it 4-1. "You read the goalie and you let your instincts take over. I made the move and I was glad to see it go in." Ward made the most spectacular of his 19 saves while the Devils were pressing forward with six skaters. Adam Henrique appeared to have an open net with Ward flat on his back, but the goalie managed to make a sweeping glove save with 2:33 left. "Mad scramble in front and I was on my back and it was very difficult for me to get up," Ward said. "It was a desperation save. I kept my eyes on it. He gave me a chance by trying to put it in the middle of the net and my glove was there." Jaromir Jagr made it interesting when he scored with 1:47 left for the Devils. It was the 691st goal of his career, moving him past former Pittsburgh Penguins teammate Mario Lemieux for ninth place in NHL history. "Even when we were down, 4-1, we believed we could come back and we almost did," Jagr said. "They were making great blocks all night. They dont hold the puck, they shoot and thats how they scored their goals. We need to put more pucks on net." Justin Faulk scored his first of the season, and Tuomo Ruutu and Ron Hainsey each had a goal for the Hurricanes. Eric Staals assist extended his season-best points streak to seven games. Travis Zajac and Andy Greene also scored for the Devils, who lost their third in a row -- all with Martin Brodeur in goal. New Jersey goalie Cory Schneider told reporters after the teams morning skate that he was "frustrated" Brodeur was scheduled to start for the third straight game. "Yes, Im surprised," Schneider said. "Im trying to work and do what I can, but Id like to see the ice a little bit more." Faulk gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead in the first period before Ruutu, Hainsey and Dwyer each scored in the second. Ruutu made it 2-0 at 1:50 of the second after taking a backhand pass from behind the net from Staal. Zajacs goal at 4:21 cut it to 2-1. Hainsey extended the margin with a slap shot that tipped off the stick of Devils centre Patrik Elias and past Brodeur at 8:16. Dwyers short-handed goal came at 15:43 on the first power play of the game for either team. Dwyer stole the puck from Greene and broke in alone, shifted the puck to his backhand and slid it between Brodeurs legs to make it 4-1. "Anytime you can get goals like that on Marty its a big deal, because once he gets rolling he can be hard to beat," Dwyer said. Greene redeemed himself when he unloaded a slap shot that beat Ward, slicing the deficit to 4-2 at 8:30 of the third period. Greenes third goal of the season was set up by Elias and Steve Bernier. Carolina struck at the 6:44 mark of the first period when Faulk fired a low shot from the right point that beat Brodeur to the glove side. Neither team was whistled for a penalty in the first period, with Carolina gaining a 12-6 advantage in shots. Overall the shots were even at 22, with Brodeur stopping 18 before a sellout crowd of 16,592. NOTES: Staal has three goals and five assists during his points streak. ... The colours of the rainbow will be seen this weekend at football stadiums up and down the United Kingdom. The Rainbow Laces campaign carries a simple message: Make sport everyones game. The aim is to create awareness of homophobia and a pathway to stop abuse and change attitudes. The issues are huge. Homophobia in football still rife Rainbow Laces survey shows 72% of football fans have witnessed homophobic abuse at games Football Association chairman Greg Clarke told a committee of MPs in October that he wouldnt recommend that a male gay footballer come out publicly right now. The comments were viewed as clumsy and awkward; however, a relevant point had been made and a conversation had begun. Does an environment exist where a current footballer would feel comfortable to come out as a gay man? Thomas Hitzlsperger revealed he was gay after announcing his retirement from professional football We have been and are working so hard so that if a player felt they wanted to have the conversation about coming out, we would be there and offer any and all the support we could, the FAs Head of Equality Sue Ravenlaw said.We understand it would be such a difficult decision, but I reiterate all the support would be there. Hitzlsperger told Sky Sports in September that footballs battle against homophobia is still in its infancy There are currently many anti-homophobia charities striving to create that suitable and safe environment, in the event that a professional footballer does reveal himself to be gay. Football is in a bubble when it comes to gay men playing the game. Jose Mourinho is prepared to find a place for Ryan Giggs on his Manchester United coaching staff, but not in the role of assistant manager, according to Sky sources. Mourinhos agent Jorge Mendes will arrive in England on Tuesday for talks with Uniteds executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward at an undisclosed central London location.Whilst an agreement is expected to be reached quickly due to Mourinhos strong desire to become United manager, and the fact initial talks took place earlier in the year, one detail still to be concluded is the length of his contract. Jose Mourinho has been inseparable from assistant Rui Faria since 2001 Mourinho will take his trusted deputy Rui Faria to Old Trafford as assistant manager though, meaning an effective demotion for Giggs if he agrees to stay at the club. However, Mourinho holds the former wingers achievements at United in high regard and is keen to find a role for him to extend his 29-year association with the Red Devils.Giggs, Uniteds most decorated player, previously worked under David Moyes as player-coach, before taking charge of the final four games of the 2013-14 season in the role of interim manager when Moyes was sacked. Giggs was Van Gaals assistant during his two years at Manchester United He was then named assistant manager when Louis van Gaal took charge the following summer. Giggs has been seen by some influential figures at the club as a future United manager, although this is the second time he has been overlooked for the top job.Woodward briefed Giggs on the latest developments at the clubs Carrington training ground on Monday, before the confirmation of Van Gaals sacking was made public later in the day. It is expected Giggs will speak with Mourinho in person before making a decision on his future. However, that conversation will not take place before Mourinhos own contract with the club is signed.Mourinho has worked with Faria since 2001, when the former was appointed manager of Uniao de Leiria, and hired Faria as fitness coach and assistant manager. Jose Mourinho signed Asmir Begovic for Chelsea and the Bosnian keeper is backing Mourinho to turn Manchester United into title challengers again They have been inseparable since, with Faria following Mourinho to Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, before returning to Chelsea for their second spell. The pair met at Mourinos London home on Monday afternoon, spending around 90 minutes discussing their next move. The future of highly-rated Under-21 team boss Warren Joyce is also uncertain. Blackburn Rovers approached United for permission to speak to Joyce last week.Joyce is keen to make the step up to manage at a higher level, although he wishes to know where he fits in to Mourinhos plans before making a final decision. It is thought United will not stand in Joyces way if he wishes to leave, but will defer the final decision to Mourinho. Klitschko vacated his WBC heavyweight title on Monday and said he doesnt expect to fight again as he pursues a presidential bid in his home country, where citizens have been protesting for weeks in Kyiv over President Viktor Yanukovychs decision to shun closer ties with the European Union and push his country toward Russia. The World Boxing Council proclaimed Klitschko a "Champion Emeritus," a move that would allow him to challenge the new champion directly should he wish to resume his career. "This offer makes it theoretically possible to return to the ring, which I cannot imagine at all happening as things stand now," Klitschko said in a statement. "I am now concentrating on the politics in Ukraine, I feel people need me there." Stiverne (23-1-1), a Haitian-born Montrealer based in Las Vegas, is the WBCs top-ranked contender and has been waiting for Klitschko to make a decision on his future. It is expected that Stiverne will face No. 2-ranked American Chris Arreola for the title. On April 27, Stiverne scored a convincing unanimous decision over Arreola in Ontario, Calif. to win the WBC Silver belt, an unofficial interim title. Stivernes Montreal-based manager Camille Estaphan hopes to meet with WBC officials Tuesday in Los Angeles to confirm a title bout between his fighter and Arreola, which he hopes will take place in March or April. Estaphan said Klitschkos retirement may also help Stiverne financially. "If we had fought Klitschko, the champion would get 70 per cent of the purse, while now, that will be in our favour," said Estaphan. "Were hoping theres a little present under the tree for us just before Christmas.dddddddddddd" Klitschko is a lawmaker and chairman of the opposition party Udar (Punch) and intends to run for president in 2015. Klitschko has taken an active part in the rallies, urging his countrymen to continue their fight to turn the ex-Soviet republic into a genuine Western democracy. "This is not a revolution. It is a peaceful protest that demands justice," Klitschko told The Associated Press in an interview earlier this month. "The people are not defending political interests. They are defending the idea of living in a civilized country." The 42-year-old Klitschko has a 45-2 record, with 41 KOs. His younger brother Wladimir holds the other significant heavyweight belts. "My brother Wladimir will be responsible for further sporting successes," the older Klitschko said Monday. Vitali has not fought since September 2012, when he made the 10th defence of his belt with a fourth-round stoppage of previously unbeaten Manuel Charr. "With the current extreme and delicate political situation in Ukraine, Vitali has answered his countrys call to fight for human rights and equality. Accordingly, Vitali will not be able to provide the WBC with a predictable time-frame to return to the ring," the WBC said. "In other words, under his new distinction (Champion Emeritus), Klitschko will, in essence, retire with the option of being able to return to the ring at any time and be eligible to fight for the title against the reigning belt holder." MINNEAPOLIS - The boos were raining down on Kevin Love and his 3-pointer wasnt falling in the building he used to call home.On nights like this in his six years in Minnesota, Love had no one to turn to for help. In Cleveland, he has LeBron James, and the best player in the world wasnt about to let his new teammate down on an emotional night.James scored 16 of his 36 points in the fourth quarter to win a stirring duel with rookie Andrew Wiggins, leading the Cavaliers to a 106-90 victory over the Timberwolves in Loves first game back in Minnesota since he was traded. It was all our responsibilities as his teammates and his brothers to protect him tonight, James said. Throughout anything, it was the uncertainty. He didnt know what to expect. He could lean on us throughout everything that happened today and for us we just had to go out there and help him get a win.Love finished with 14 points on 6-for-14 shooting and 17 rebounds. But he was just 1 for 5 on 3-pointers and was outshined by Wiggins, the headliner in the three-team deal that got Love out of Minnesota.Wiggins had 33 points and four steals for the Timberwolves (8-39), who gave Love and the Cavaliers all they could handle in front of a standing-room-only crowd.I love a big stage, Wiggins said. I love playing in the spotlight. A lot of fans. Big crowd.James kicked things into gear in the final nine minutes. He scored 13 straight for the Cavs, who have won 10 straight to improve to 29-20.Thaddeus Young scored 19 and Nikola Pekovic had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Timberwolves, but they were just 3-for-19 in the fourth quarter.Trailing by five early in the fourth, James responded by thundering to the rim for a dunk, hitting a 3-pointer, three free throws and another 3 over Wiggins outstretched hand to give the Cavs a 94-87 lead with five minutes to play.Love was traded to Cleveland in the blockbuster deal of the summer, bringing Wiggins, the No. 1 overall pick, Anthony Bennett and Young to Minnesota. Love made three All-Star teams as a Timberwolves forward, but they never made the playoffs. And he drew the fans hire by requesting a trade at the end of last season.Love was booed throughout the game, except for during a brief video tribute in the first quarter highlighting his six seasons in Minnesota. He exchanged hugs with Wolves owner Glen Taylor and his wife, Becky, and laughs with Pekovic and Wolves coach Flip Saunders during the game. He focused on those moments more than the booing when asked after the game.Truth be told, I thought it was a pretty good reception, especially from people with familiar faces, Love said. When the video was over, all the good will went out the window. Every touch of the ball was booed. Every missed shot was cheered as loudly as a dunk by Wiggins, who gave James everything he had. That included out-running him to a loose ball and throwing down a dunk to get a rare sellout crowd roaring. He showed tonight that hes got potential, that hes going to be a superstar in this league, Saunders said. He rises to the moment. Hes not afraid of the moment.TIP-INSCavaliers: Earlier in the week, the Timberwolves produced a tongue-in-cheek video touting the return of Mike Miller, who spent one season in Minnesota as a jab at Loves comeback. Every time I play somewhere I feel a connection, Miller said. ... Kyrie Irving had a quiet night with 12 points on 4-for-16 shooting.Timberwolves: Ricky Rubio plans to play on Monday against Dallas, ending a 43-game absence with an injured left ankle. ... Flip Saunders said F Shabazz Muhammad (oblique) was making some progress in his rehab, but the team wouldnt have a clear timeline for his return until next week. ... The 19-year-old Wiggins became the first teenager to score at least 23 points in a half since Irving did it in 2012.MORE INJURIESInjuries to Mo Williams (hip) and Zach LaVine (ankle) left the Wolves with just one healthy point guard for the game in Lorenzo Brown, who just signed a 10-day contract on Wednesday. Brown had one point and nine assists and played almost the entire game.UP NEXTCavaliers: Host Philadelphia on Monday.Timberwolves: Visit Dallas on Monday. Cheap Fake Air Max 90 . "Arm felt really good from the get-go," said Anderson, who made his last start a full week before. "It felt like college days, six days of rest. After Reimoulds home run, Hill doubled in Inciarte and Mark Trumbo added an RBI single. "You go up there every day and you do your work and you hope for the best," Hill said. "I just feel good going into the last month." Jorge De La Rosa took the loss, the Rockies fifth in six games. De La Rosa (13-10) allowed four runs on seven hits through six-plus innings, but was chased after Reimoulds home run. "We were hoping to get through the first three hitters in the seventh but the first two guys in the inning ended up scoring," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "At that point I had to go get (De La Rosa). He did what he almost always does, he puts us in a position to win games." "Were getting there," Gibson said, "but we dont know whos going to be here." The club is waiting to see if Triple-A Reno makes the post-season before deciding on whom to bring up. Arcadia, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Mischief Clem battled with Pulmarack down the stretch and pulled out the victory in Saturdays $250,000 California Cup Derby at Santa Anita. Won last year by eventual Horse of the Year California Chrome, the Cal Cup Derby had seven 3-year-olds leave the gate to go 1 1/16 miles. Setting the pace was 1-2 favorite Acceptance with 11-1 longshot Mischief Clem pressing from the outside along with 7-2 second pick Tough Sunday. Pulmarack, the 8-1 third choice, ranged up from the outside to join the leaders around the final turn and quickly entered into a duel with Mischief Clem. These two battled through the stretch until Mischief Clem posted a head victory. A wonderful job by Kent, Hess said. The horse has a ton of heart. I questioned his ability to go this far. I think he came through today, and I think more than anything, this is his home track. He loves it here. We were able to train him here, school him here; I didnt do that last time, and it showed today. Getting third was Kluszewski followed by Acceptance, Neveradoubt, Chanito and Tough Sunday. Avanti Bello was an early scratch. The time for the Cal Cup Derby was 1:44.82 on a fast track. Owned by Griffin Thoroughbred Stables, Mischief Clem garnered his first stakes win and added $137,500 to his earnings. The colt has won half of his six lifetime starts for $266,380. "We wholeheartedly support and embrace the decision by the NBA and Commissioner Adam Silver today. Now the healing process begins," the statement read. The Clippers website also greets visitors with the simple slogan, "WE ARE ONE" on a black background containing solely the team logo without any links. A recording became public on Friday, when TMZ.com posted nearly 10 minutes of audio it said is a conversation between Sterling and his girlfriend, in which a man tells a woman he is bothered by her association with African-Americans and asks her not to bring them to Clippers games. Deadspin.com also released another tape, said to be between Sterling and his girlfriend, in which the man tells the woman he supports the players because his money pays for their food, clothes, cars and houses. Silver said on Tuesday that the NBAs investigation into the situation included an interview of Sterling, who confirmed it was his voice on the recording. Silver is also urging the NBA Board of Governors to force Sterling to sell the team. Nearly lost in the middle of the mess is that the Clippers are set to host the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night in Game 5 of their Western Conference quarterfinal with the series even at two games apiece. The Clippers statement added that the organization will hold a press conference Tuesday night prior to their game. Other statements and tweets following the punishment issued by Silver include: "I agree 100% with Commissioner Silvers findings and the actions taken against Donald Sterling," Mavericks owner Mark Cuban tweeted shortly after the announcement. "Commissioner Silver showed great leadership in banning LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life," tweeted former Lakers great Earvin "Magic" Johnson. "Former and current NBA players are very happy and satisfied with Commissioner Silvers ruling " "I commend Commissioner Adam Silver in being diligent in how he handled this important matter. He acted swiftly and appropriately with the severity of the penalty and I strongly support his decision," said Atlanta Hawks majority owner Bruce Levenson in a statement. "The Orlando Magic feel the recent reprehensible comments by Donald Sterliing were absolutely unacceptable and do not reflect the values and beliefs of our organization or our league.dddddddddddd. We applaud the leadership of NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, as well as head coach Doc Rivers and his players, who are at the epicenter of the situation," read a statement released by the Orlando Magic. Former NBA center and current NBA analyst Shaquille ONeal tweeted, "Way to go, Commissioner Silver! The NBA stands for everybody!" Miami Heat forward LeBron James tweeted, "Commissioner Silver thank you for protecting our beautiful and powerful league!! Great leader!! #BiggerThanBasketball #StriveForGreatness" "Standing ovation for Commissioner Silver. Big time decision standing up for the league and its players. Now, Gotta see it through" tweeted Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry. A statement from the Toronto Raptors read, "As a proud member of the National Basketball Association, we stand strongly in our belief that the comments attributed to Mr. Sterling have no place in our society or sport. Our organization will always work to contribute to a culture of diversity and acceptance in this league and fully support the actions taken today. We thank Commissioner Adam Silver, and all of the NBA players, for their leadership on this important issue." The following statement was released by Golden State Warriors Co-Owner and CEO Joe Lacob on behalf of the entire Warriors organization: "We applaud the firm punishment handed out today by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and appreciate the swiftness with which the NBA conducted its investigation. Similarly, we anticipate that the NBA Board of Governors will act promptly to put this chapter behind us. As I noted on Sunday, the sentiments expressed on the audio recording were completely inappropriate, unacceptable and senseless. We cannot tolerate such feelings or beliefs, not only in the NBA, but in society in general. There is absolutely no room for racism in our world, period." "The Timberwolves stand firmly in full support of the swift and impactful action taken today by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. His leadership and direction in this matter is completely appropriate and appreciated by the Timberwolves organization. We stand unified with Commissioner Silver today and reaffirm our organizations zero tolerance approach to the type of reprehensible behavior which caused this action," read a statement from Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor. ST. LOUIS -- No. 2 Wichita State is still perfect. Calm and collected, too, in a 32nd straight win. The top-seeded Shockers stayed unbeaten with an 80-58 romp over Evansville in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley tournament Friday. "I love how this team goes about their business, their approach and how resolute they are," coach Gregg Marshall said. "Theyre really, really focused and locked in to the next challenge, and thats how you win 32 in a row." If theyre feeling pressure because of the streak, their opponents never noticed. "Fantastic to see what theyre doing," Evansville guard D.J. Balentine said after scoring 31 points. "If people say they dont deserve a No. 1 seed, thats silly." Cleanthony Early and Ron Baker scored 17 points apiece and Wichita State set a tournament record with 11 blocked shots, shot 51 per cent and held Evansville to 37 per cent. "Got to have some erasers back there," point guard Fred VanVleet said. It was intimidating on both ends, with everyone sharing in the success and no one taking more than 11 shots. Just how Marshall drew it up. "This team is very unselfish," Baker said. "If we continue to play like that, I like our chances." Balentine made seven 3-pointers for ninth-seeded Evansville (14-19), which lost twice by an average of 15 points to Wichita State (32-0) in the regular season. The Purple Aces led 20-19 midway through the first half before Wichita State started pulling away. "Its hard for us to just make passes from A to B," coach Marty Simmons said. "They play hard. They challenge every catch. Their intensity is outstanding." Kadeem Coleby had six of the blocks for the Shockers, who are two victories shy of matching the NCAA record of 34 wins to start a season by UNLV in 1990-91. UNLV was perfect before losing in the NCAA semifinals to Duke that season. Wichita State beat every Valley school twice in the regular season and takes on the Missouri State-Illinois State winner in the semifinals Saturday. Missouri State has come the closest to beating the Shockers, losing by three in overtime at home in January after blowing a 19-point lead. This is rarified air for the Shockers, who havent been ranked this high since 1981 when they were also No. 2. They went to the Final Four last year as a No. 9 seed and are two wins away from a first Valley title since 1987 and a likely No. 1 seed. "Theyre disciplined in everything they do," Simmons said. "Theyre well-schooled. Theyre well-taught. They dont beat themselves." Balentine was 7 for 14 from 3-point range, falling one short of the school record while slowed at the finish by a hip injury. He led the Valley with a 22.5-point average and scored 30 points in the play-in game victory over eighth-seeded Drake on Thursday. "I thought once we got Balentine to miss a couple shots, we were in much better shape," Marshall said. "He was incredible." Egidiju Mockevicius added 11 points and 11 rebounds for Evansville. Early had a four-point play and a three-point play and ran down Blake Simmons to swat away a layup late in the first half. Baker had five points in a 17-5 run that made it 40-27 with 1:34 left in the first half. "We dont get any foul calls in practice," Early said. "Its like Im trying to make the basket regardless because I feel like I might not get the foul call." The Shockers were just as relentless in the second half. A 15-5 run put them up 20 points with just under 12 minutes to go. Baker was 4 for 6 from 3-point range and Tekele Cotton was 3 for 5. VanVleet, the Valley player of the year, had nine points, five assists and four steals. Chadrack Lufile had 11 points and seven rebounds, and Early added six rebounds and two blocks. "I dont tell good players to pass on good shots," Marshall said. "When its your turn to shoot and youre open, I want you to shoot it, and, in fact, I get upset with them when they dont. "I think theyve got character, for sure." One language he has yet to master is Spanish, which just happens to be the native tongue of Vancouvers extensive Latin American contingent — including captain Pedro Morales and fellow midfielders Matias Laba and Mauro Rosales.Football is a universal language, said the 34-year-old Kah. For me its just about understanding and helping each other on the pitch.Born in Gambia before moving to Norway with his family at the age of eight, Kah has more than 300 professional games under his belt, including 47 with Portland last season. The former Norwegian international comes to a squad looking for some added leadership on and off the field after the Whitecaps parted ways with veteran defender Andy OBrien in the off-season.I wanted to bring in an experienced MLS guy, said Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson. I know Kahs character. I know what hes about.Vancouver will have a much different look in the centre of defence this season after also saying goodbye to Johnny Leveron and Carlyle Mitchell. Kendall Waston is back after he was acquired last summer in time to help the Whitecaps push for a playoff spot, while the team added 24-year-old Uruguayan Diego Rodriguez on loan with a transfer option earlier this month. Vancouver has also used first-round draft picks on central defenders Christian Dean (2014) and Tim Parker (2015) the last two years.I want good characters here. Ive stressed that all along, said Robinson. The new players coming in, I think you can see what they bring to the table just in one day. Theyre character guys and we need that as a club moving forward. Its not going to be easy. I know its going to be a lot harder than it was last year, and it was hard last year. But if you want an easy life youre in the wrong sport. We know the challenge ahead of us.For his part, Robinson said Rodriguez is a perfect example of the type of player the Whitecaps are looking for in terms of age, playing style and ability.Footwork fundamentals that you need as a defender, Diegos got, said Robinson. He wants to defend. He enjoys defending. He enjoys putting his body on the line.Rodriguez said that hes looking forward to getting to know his new teammates and fight for that open spot alongside the 27-year-old Waston.Ive seen videoss of him and hes an important player, said Rodriguez.dddddddddddd I can learn a lot from Kendalls game. I hope I get an opportunity to play with him.Kah was by far the most vocal player on the pitch Monday and added that he still feels he has plenty to contribute and is ready to fight for a spot in the starting 11.If I didnt see myself as a starter then I wouldnt play soccer, said Kah. A football player whos content to be on the bench — thats not me.Apart from the remodelled defence, the Whitecaps also acquired another Uruguayan in 23-year-old striker Octavio Rivero as a young designated player in December as Vancouver looks to improve on last seasons performance that ended with a first-round playoff loss to FC Dallas. The guys that have come in have already shown theyre easy to get into the team and theyre good guys. Hopefully well see the same tight-knit group as last year, said goalkeeper David Ousted. I saw the people we brought in and it looks exciting. I cant wait to play with them and see what kind of players they are and get to know them. Its important to get to know the guys and get them in the team and get that chemistry.Kah, Waston and Rodriguez are all aggressive central defenders and Robinson said part of the reason for having five capable bodies in the fold is the inevitable suspensions that will come during the course of the season because of yellow card accumulation. At some stage, whether its a wrong decision by a player, a wrong decision by an official, it does happen, said Robinson. Its important I have the cover. Im not worried about that because I dont want to take their strengths out of their game. One of their main strengths is the aggression, the physicality. You look at the successful teams in this league, theyve got physical centre backs and I think its the first time we can say we have as well. The Whitecaps — who will practice in Vancouver all week before heading to Arizona to continue pre-season training — had an up-and-down 2014 campaign, but Robinson is confident the moves for Kah, Rodriguez and Rivero have the team in a good position ahead of the opener on March 7 against Toronto FC.Its important to be a forward-moving club that the players you bring in have to be better than the players that are leaving, said Robinson. Bringing in starters or players you think can start will give you more headaches because you have to disappoint a few more players. But unfortunately thats the life were in.Notes: The Whitecaps announced on Monday that 21-year-old midfielder Ben McKendry has graduated from the clubs residency program and signed an MLS contract. The Vancouver native joined the Whitecaps youth system at the age of 14 back in 2007.___Follow @JClipperton_CP on Twitter. ' ' '
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Brett Connolly scored once and set up three more and Jonathan Marchessault had a pair of goals as the Syracuse Crunch defeated the visiting Toronto Marlies 6-3 on Saturday in American Hockey League action. Mike Angelidis, Yanni Gourde and Philippe Paradis also scored for the Crunch (30-30-12) while Cedrick Desjardins made 33 saves for the win. Sam Carrick, Greg McKegg and T.J. Brennan supplied the scoring for the Marlies (42-24-6), who played half the game without head coach Steve Spott after, who was ejected in the second period for abuse of the official. Toronto took the first six minor penalties of the game and found themselves down 3-0 after the first period. Angelidis opened the scoring with a power-play goal exactly one minute into the game. Paradis doubled the Crunch lead at 12:33 and Gourde added a goal late in the period while on the man advantage. Carrick put the Marlies on the board 3:29 into the second period, but Marchessault responded with two goals 2:03 apart to make it 5-1 Syracuse. Frustration boiled over for Spott and his club and at 13:42 he was assessed a game misconduct for unsportsmanlike conduct. Torontos Korbinian Holzer and Brad Staubitz were ejected for fighting altercations on the same play. Brennan scored in the final minute of the second for the Marlies and McKegg made it a two-goal game 4:09 into the third. Connolly, however, halted any chance of a comeback when he made it 6-3 at 17:17. Torontos Frazer McLaren was added to the list of ejected players at 12:13 of the third when he was assessed a major for charging. In all, the Marlies had 90 minutes in penalties while the Crunch had 37. Syracuse went 2 for 9 on the power play while Toronto went 0 for 1. Junior Fernandez . Cameron Maybin reached base after an overturned umpires call, then scored on Yonder Alonsos slow grounder with one out in the ninth inning to give the Padres a 4-3 win Sunday that stopped a four-game losing streak. It was a perfect combination for the Padres -- the speedy Maybin at third base, left-hander Oliver Perez on the mound, one out and the infield in, a ball that went just the right distance and another winning challenge by manager Bud Black. Maybin broke for home as Alonso hit a dribbler down the first-base line. Paul Goldschmidt barehanded it and threw home, but Maybin had already slid across with the winning run. "With a lefty pitcher there, Im able to get a little bit bigger lead than usual," said Maybin, who was reinstated from the disabled list a week earlier. "And it was just a situation, man, where if it was a line drive I probably was going to get doubled up. I was going on the swing even more so than contact, so it worked out. It was probably the shortest RBI he ever had." Said Alonso: "It could have gone 10 feet, and Cam would have scored. I know with Cam running, anythings possible in this game. My approach the whole time was just get it done. Whatever you do, dont strike out. Put the ball in play." Even with all the factors turning out right, Black said it was "a pretty standard procedure in that situation, game-winning run. Worse-case scenario is out at home, then you still have first and third with two outs. The proper grounder was hit, where it was not smoked, Cam had a good secondary lead, reacted to the swing in the hitting area as instructed, and beat the play." Maybin started the winning rally with a chopper to second off Perez (0-1). He initially was called out, but Black challenged and the call was changed to safe, giving Maybin an infield single and making Black 2 for 2 in challenges Sunday and 4 for 4 this season. Rene Rivera, who earlier hit a two-run double, doubled over right fielder Gerardo Parra to move Maybin to third. "I wasnt a big fan at first," Maybin said of the new replay system. "But it worked out." Said Black: "Those are close plays. In 2014, thats the beauty of replay, the technology." The Padres scored their most runs in five games.dddddddddddd "It was huge, man," Maybin said. "You never want to get swept in a series. Weve been playing some really tough, close games. We continue to compete, continue to play hard. Its good after making so many errors. We were very fortunate to get the win today." San Diego committed three errors. Huston Street (1-0) pitched the ninth for the win. Arizona entered the series with the worst record in the majors at 9-22 and the worst ERA in the majors at 5.20. After being held to five runs in their previous four games, the Padres scored first for the first time in five games. Chris Denorfias two-out single in the third brought in rookie Jace Peterson, who was hit on the hand with a pitch. That snapped a streak of 20 scoreless innings by Diamondbacks pitchers. Arizona went ahead 3-1 in the fourth. Goldschmidt hit a leadoff homer off Tyson Ross into the sandy play area beyond the fence in right-centre, his fifth. With two outs, shortstop Everth Cabrera misplayed a grounder by Cody Ross for an error. Rookie Ender Inciarte singled to left and Tuffy Gosewich brought them both in with a single to centre. San Diego tied it in their half of the inning when Rivera hit a two-out, two-run double into the left-field corner off lefty Wade Miley. "They gave me three runs, then I give them right back," Miley said. "We scored runs, then I give them more. Thats huge. To get two outs, and then I let them back in." Ross allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits in seven innings, struck out five and walked one. Miley gave up three runs and six hits in seven innings, struck out four and walked one. Black challenged a ruling that Chris Owings was safe on a grounder with two outs in the eighth. After review, Owings was called out. As a deadlock in CFL labour negotiations stretched through this past week and so much rhetoric and brinkmanship made a work stoppage seem unavoidable, it was surprising when sources confirmed to TSN that progress in talks between the CFL and the Players Associations were moving quickly Friday and into Saturday. Neither side would publicly confirm or deny any discussions were taking place, until the near unexpected happened. On Saturday night sources confirmed to TSN, the league and players agreed to terms on a new, tentative CBA, pending ratification by the unions players. A league source confirmed the CFLs board of governors must also ratify any potential agreement. Neither side would confirm specific details of the tentative deal, but sources confirmed constructive movement toward a deal started Friday. After TSN Insider Dave Naylor confirmed earlier in the week that players on seven of the leagues nine teams had voted in favour of strike action, and with strike votes set to take place in Calgary and Edmonton Saturday, sources told TSN “back door” discussions through an appointed mediator began Friday morning. Ideas and proposals were passed back and forth without acrimony and without talks breaking down. By Friday night, during a Players Association conference call, a tentative deal began to take shape. The league would hold firm on a $5 million salary cap (2013s salary cap was set at $4.4 million) increasing $50,000 a season, and would not budge on its threshold to renegotiate the salary cap in the third year of a new CBA, set at an aggregate revenue increase of $27 million from the previous year. But the ratification bonus to players would increase to $7,500 for veterans and $1,500 for rookies. And with the union possibly controlling the disbursement of the bonus, and setting a scale for veterans, a six-year CFL veteran could potentially earn $12,000 if the CBA is ratified. The league minimum salary would also rise to $50,000, from $45,000 in 2013. A significant non-financial element also possibly included was the elimination of the option contract year for non-rookies. Sources said the term of the new CBA could be set at either four years, five years or five years plus an option to extend into a sixth season. The current CBA expired May 29, the same day talks broke down after the union countered a league proposal, which included a $5 million cap and $27 million threshold, with a $5.8 million cap and $12 million threshold to renegotiate the cap. The league also rejected another offer from the players earlier this week, which included $5.2 million cap and $18 million threshold. New, positive labour discussions continued into Saturday afternoon before a scheduled conference call between union executives and team representatives. A source close to the discussions said he felt “confident” a tentative deal would be reached by the end of the day, although conceded the debate amongst the players would be “vigorous.” After a four-hour call, the union agreed to take the deal to its players. A league source confirmed the board of governors ratification vote will take place “as soon as possible.” In a joint statement the league and Players Association emphasized: “Further details [about the agreement] will not be made public until these votes have taken place.” Ed Healey Jersey . Curry posted a game-high 34 points with nine assists, seven rebounds and four steals for Golden State, which lost its franchise-high 16-game win streak in Memphis on Tuesday. Klay Thompson scored 19 points and Draymond Green flirted with a triple- double, tallying 16, nine assists and nine boards for the Warriors. Thunder star Kevin Durant scored 30 points in the first half but didnt play in the second after suffering a sprained right ankle just before halftime. Russell Westbrook picked up some of the slack, netting 33 points with eight assists but shooting just 11-for-30 from the field. The Thunder were 7-1 over their last eight games with Durant in the lineup. The reigning MVP missed the first 17 games of the season following foot surgery. The Warriors led by as many as eight in the fourth before Westbrook and the Thunder made their push. Westbrook scored all 11 points during an 11-2 Thunder flurry late in the fourth quarter. His pull-up jumper at 2:59 made it 105-104, but Curry ended the run with a jumper at the other end that put the Warriors back in front. Greens putback following Harrison Barnes missed layup pushed it to 108-105, and Curry baanked in an off-balance runner on the next trip to force a timeout.dddddddddddd Barnes turn-around jumper on an isolation post up with 17.3 seconds left made it a two-possession game, and Westbrook missed short on a deep 3 at the other end. Golden State ran out the remaining time. The Thunder carved up Golden State for 40 first-quarter points. Durant hit three 3-pointers in less than a minute to stretch Oklahoma Citys lead to 25-11 less than halfway through the opening period. Green hit a 3 and Barnes beat the buzzer with a long two, however, to pull the Warriors within eight after one. It took the Warriors less than five minutes into the second to claim their first lead. Shaun Livingstons reverse layup at 7:03, which was part of a 15-4 run, gave the hosts a 49-48 edge. OKC played from behind for the rest of the half but got within two on Andre Robersons 3-ball late in the half. Both teams shot 12-for-23 in the third quarter with a pair of 3-pointers. Golden States three free throws were the difference, as OKC went 0-for-4 from the stripe in the period. Game Notes Golden State has won seven straight at home ... With the 2014 FIFA World Cup kicking off Thursday in Brazil, TSN.cas panel of experts is here to provide you with sage advice, or at least best guesses. We asked TSNs team of soccer analysts to provide their picks for the group stage. Read on to find out who is in contention and who might be looking at an early exit. The panel consists of TSN Soccer Analysts Jason deVos, Luke Wileman and Kristian Jack, TSN Radio 1050 Toronto host Gareth Wheeler, TSN Radio 690 Montreals Noel Butler and TSN.ca soccer editors Shane McNeil and Ken Rodney. Group A: 1. Brazil, 2. Croatia 3. Cameroon, 4. Mexico. No one seems to have much doubt that the hosts are advancing to the second round and they have been chosen unanimously as group winners by TSNs experts. While Neymars training scare did sound a few alarms, it was pretty clear that Brazil was the team to back in Group A, and for several of our analysts, the team to take it all. Second place is a bit more of a toss-up with three perennially competitive teams rounding out the group, but Croatia got solid backing from more than half the TSN team. The likes of Mario Mandzukic and Luka Modric make them an offensive force and will likely provide the offence they need to make the Round of 16. Mexico has advanced to the Round of 16 in each of the last five World Cups, but their appalling qualifying performance has them on the outside looking in. The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon have only once advanced out of the group stage but still got some second-place consideration. Picks - deVos: Brazil, Croatia. Jack: Brazil, Mexico. Wileman: Brazil, Cameroon. Wheeler: Brazil, Croatia. Butler: Brazil, Croatia. McNeil: Brazil, Croatia. Rodney: Brazil, Croatia. Group B: 1. Spain, 2. Netherlands, 3. Chile, 4. Australia. One of the more stacked groups in the competition, Group B was a divisive force amongst the TSN soccer team with the two reigning finalists pulling first- and second-place votes away from one another. The Champs, though, did prevail, and Spain is the consensus pick to top the group. Theyve won three straight tournaments dating back to Euro 2008 and theres not much to suggest they arent going to be competitive in Brazil. Dont underestimate the importance of group play here, because whoever finishes second will in all likelihood draw Brazil in the Round of 16. While Chile was picked as a second-place finisher on more than one ballot (and first by Kristian Jack!), the Netherlands took the second spot in the group. And why not? With the likes of Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben, the Dutch are wired to score in droves. The Australians will have to settle for a participation ribbon in this competition. Picks - deVos: Spain, Chile. Jack: Chile, Netherlands. Wileman: Spain, Netherlands . Wheeler: Spain, Netherlands. Butler: Spain, Chile. McNeil: Netherlands, Spain. Rodney: Spain, Netherlands. Group C: 1. Ivory Coast, 2. Colombia, 3. Japan, 4. Greece. This is another balanced group that prompted a wide variety of scenarios from our analysts. In the end, though, two teams emerged well ahead as the cream of the group. Unfortunately, those two teams wound up in a dead heat in terms of votes received. Were giving Ivory Coast the nod by virtue of having more first-place votes, so watch out for Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure and the rest of the Elephants to step up amid fierce competition. Colombia was the easy choice for second place and may well have been the favourite here if Radamel Falcao were fit enough to play. We still like their chances to advance and make a serious run at topping the group. Japans Samurai seem to succeed at the World Cup every other tournament (they made the Round of 16 in South Africa), but they are up against some serious competition in this group that doesnt really have a minnow. Greece is a team that can usually lull its way into the playoffs with staunch defence, but they were unable to convince our analysts that they will silence Colombia or the Ivorians. Picks - deVos: Colombia, Ivory Coast. Jack: Colombia, Japan. Wileman: Colombia, Ivory Coast. Wheeler: Ivory Coast, Colombia. Butler: Ivory Coast, Colombia. McNeil: Ivory Coast, Greece. Rodney: Ivory Coast, Colombia. Group D: 1. Uruguay, 2. Italy, 3. England, 4. Costa Rica. Yes, we know, you probably disagree. As you can see below, the vote was razor thin with little wiggle room between the reigning the perennial picks from England and Italy and the reigning bronze medalists from Uruguay. Heres the logic: Luis Suarez is not 100 per cent, but he is still probably the breakout player of the group. The Uruguayans will be buoyed by the fact that they won the World Cup last time it was held in Brazil and were the top-ranked team in the group at the time of the draw. They received the most first-place votes of any team in the group from our panel. The margin between England and Italy is harder to discern. All our analysts conceded that both have the talent to go through but both are facing obstacles. England has the tougher games to start their group play, while Italys travel schedule works against them. Theres no easy way to pick this group, since its one of several Groups of Death in this competition. If you dont like our picks, change them. The vote was so split in this group that its hard to call this a true consensus choice. Picks - deVos: Italy, Uruguay. Jack: Uruguay, Italy. Wileman: Italy, England. Wheeler: England, Italy. Butler: England, Italy. McNeil: Uruguay, England. Rodney: Uruguay, Italy. Group E: 1. France, 2. Ecuador, 3. Switzerland, 4. Honduras. In the second unanimous decision, France emerged as the clear favourite from Group E. Theyve alternated between sublime and ugly at each World Cup since hosting in 1998. The 2010 effort in South Africa could not have been uglier, so that leaves nothing but room for improvement. Losing Franck Ribery stings, but Les Bleus have the depth to at least top this quartet. The race for second was tight. Ecuadors Antonio Valencia showed hes in full compete mode by getting a red in a recent friendly against England, so if he comes out and plays at the top of his game, it should propel yet another South American team into the playoffs. The Swiss were one of the surprise teams in the top seeding pot for the 2014 draw and as such should also be considered a serious threat to advance. No one seems to be a believer in Honduras. Picks - deVos: France, Ecuador. Jack: France, Switzerland. Wileman: France, Ecuador. Wheeler: France, Switzerland. Butler: France, Switzerland. McNeil: France, Ecuador. Rodney: France, Ecuador. Group F: 1. Argentina, 2. Nigeria, 3. Bosnia and Herzegovina, 4. Iran. To the surprise of few, were picking Lionel Messi, Kun Aguero and the rest of Argentinas potent attack to easily run this group and – like their rivals from Brazil – theyre a popular pick to take the entire tournament. Nigerias Super Eagles are our pick to take second in the group behind some English Premier League talent in their midfield in the forms of John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses. Some of our resident internet nerds from TSN.ca really like Bosnia and Herzegovinas chances and the team did score a heap of goals in qualifying, but Edin Dzeko and co. came up short in the vote and may have to settle for thrilling their fans simply by making their first-ever appearance. Iran has won just one game in three previous trips to the World Cup. Picks - deVos: Argentina, Bosnia/Herzegovina. Jack: Argentina, Nigeria. Wileman: Argentina, Nigeria. Wheeler: Argentina, Nigeria. Butler: Argentina, Nigeria. McNeil: Argentina, Bosnia/Herzegovina. Rodney: Argentina, Bosnia/Herzegovina. Group G: 1. Germany, 2. Portugal, 3. USA, 4. Ghana. The deepest of the groups from top to bottom, the only thing everyone could agree on was that the Germans are going through. They dont tend to leave the group stage to chance and have finished in the top eight at every World Cup since being banned from the 1950 World Cup (also in Brazil). They will get through and in all likelihood as group-winners. Portugal gets the second-place vote here but it wasnt a unanimous decision. Cristiano Ronaldo will carry the Portuguese, the only question is: how far? He out-willed Zlatan Ibrahimovic to get his team here. Does he have it in him to carry the team deep? The U.S. got some love as potential spoilers, so keep an eye on them. They surprised a lot of people in South Africa and Jurgen Klinsmann has been busy sowing the seeds of doubt around his team before the tournament. Is he just trying to get other teams to let their guards down? Ghana is a strong team and would be a threat to advance in most other groups... just not this one. Picks - deVos: Germany, Portugal. Jack: Portugal, Germany. Wileman: Germany, Portugal. Wheeler: Germany, USA. Butler: Portugal, Germany. McNeil: Germany, USA. Rodney: Germany, Portugal. Group H: 1. Belgium, 2. Russia, 3. Korea Republic, 4. Algeria. A chic underdog pick in this competition, Belgium is the team to beat in Group H according to everyone here at TSN. They boast a superb balance of attack and defend with some reliable and smart talent all through their line-up. How frightening is it that if teams are able to neutralize Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku that they might still see Adnan Januzaj coming off the bench? Russia are back at the World Cup for the first time in over a decade and we like their odds to get out of the group due to their ability to score in droves. Theyve struggled in big tournaments since the fall of the Soviet Union, but they did manage to finish third at Euro 2008. Korea Republic have already continued their streak of eight straight trips to the World Cup, but we believe thats where the dream ends. As for Algeria, English and American fans will be able to tell you that they are capable of causing trouble. We just dont see them as a threat to advance. Picks - deVos: Belgium, Russia. Jack: Belgium, Russia. Wileman: Belgium, Russia. Wheeler: Belgium, Korea. Butler: Belgium, Russia. McNeil: Belgium, Russia. Rodney: Belgium, Russia. New Orleans Pelicans Store . All three goals came in extra time after Algeria dominated for long stretches during the opening 90 minutes. "It was a victory of will power," Germany coach Joachim Loew said. "We had major problems in the first half to organize the way we played. We made simple mistakes, which invited the opponents to start counter attacks." Germany finally took the lead when Thomas Mueller provided a cross from the left flank that was slightly behind Schuerrle. The Germany forward dragged his left leg and backheeled the ball into the far corner in the 92nd minute, leaving goalkeeper Rais Mbolhi with no chance. Ozil added the second in the 120th and substitute Abdelmoumene Djabou pulled one back in injury time for Algeria. Three-time champion Germany will next face 1998 winner France on Friday at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. With the temperature a chilly 14 degrees Celsius (57 degrees Fahrenheit) and a light rain falling at times, the pace was high at the Estadio Beira-Rio but the goals didnt come until the end. Ozil thought he had put the result out of reach when he pounded in a rebound after a shot from Schuerrle was cleared off the line by defender Esseid Belkalem, but Djabou volleyed in a minute later to make the last seconds count. Perhaps inspired by the "Disgrace of Gijon" at the 1982 World Cup, when Germany and Austria supposedly conspired to oust Algeria in the group stagee, the northern African nation outmatched Germanys intensity for long stretches in an entertaining match.dddddddddddd. Algeria was playing in the second round of the World Cup for the first time and thought it had taken the lead before a goal from Islam Slimani was waved off for offside in the 17th, one of many opportunities for the Algeria striker. At the start of the second half, Germany put Schuerrle on for Mario Goetze in an attacking midfield and came out better organized. In the 55th, Germany captain Philipp Lahm unleashed a hard shot that an outstretched Rais did well to push wide with his fingertips. Still, Algeria continued to produce dangerous counterattacks. In the 72nd, Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had to come out of his area to head away the danger with Slimani chasing. In the 88th, Germanys inability to find the target turned theatrical for a moment when Mueller appeared to fall during a free kick. Then the goals came, the rain intensified, and Germany took control. Still, Algeria was cheered by its fans at the final whistle, while the Germany supporters appeared more relieved than content. ___ Germany: Manuel Neuer; Shkodran Mustafi (Sami Khedira, 70), Per Mertesacker, Jerome Boateng, Benedikt Hoewedes; Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger (Christoph Kramer, 109), Mesut Ozil, Toni Kroos, Mario Goetze (Andre Schuerrle, 46); Thomas Mueller. MIAMI - The convicted ringleader of a smuggling organization that brought more than 1,000 Cubans into the U.S., some of them baseball players including Texas Rangers outfielder Leonys Martin, was sentenced Monday to more than 14 years in federal prison.U.S. District Judge Joan Lenard rejected a request for leniency by Eliezer Lazo, whom she noted was paid $22,000 a month through the scheme — not counting the percentages of any professional baseball contracts the players signed. Prosecutors say Martin paid the Lazo group $1.2 million after signing with the Rangers in 2011.Thats a lot of money, Lenard said.Lazo, 41, will begin serving the sentence after finishing an unrelated five-year prison term for money laundering in a Medicare fraud case. In the smuggling case, he pleaded guilty in August to extortion conspiracy. The Lazo organization smuggled Cubans by boat to Mexico for $10,000 each, more for the baseball players, according to court documents. They would then usually travel to the U.S. border crossing at Laredo, Texas, and ask to be permitted to stay in the U.S.Under the U.S. wet foot, dry foot policy, Cubans who reach dry land in the U.S. are generally allowed to remain while those intercepted at sea are returned to the communist island. Lazos attorney, William Clay, said many of Lazos customers were overjoyed to make it to the U.S. despite the costs. They had gotten what they bargained for, Clay said. But Assistant U.S. Attorney Ron Davidson said migrants who couldnt pay were held for ransom by armed guards, often threatened and sometimes beaten. Although Lazo himself did not participate in any violence, Davidson said he was well aware it was going on.This man is not a freedom fighter, Davidson said. The case also provided a glimpse into how Mexican drug cartels get their cut of the migrant smuggling business. Court documents show that in the Cancun area, the Zetas cartel charges Cuban smugglers $10,000 per boat and up to $3,000 per migrant to allow them to pass through their territory and assist in paying bribes to local officials. No evidence surfaced in the case that Martin or any of the other valuable Cuban ballplayers were mistreated. Only Martin has been identified by name in the Lazo case, but other Cuban stars such as Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig have also been smuggled through Mexico.Aside from being free from Cuba, baseball players from that country have an incentive to go to a third country such as Mexico before signing MLB contracts. If they came directly to the U.S., they would be subject to the MLB draft and likely sign a less lucrative deal. Going to Mexico first makes them free agents looking for the highest bidder.Martin, a speedy outfielder, signed a five-year, $15.5 million contract with the Rangers in 2011. Last year he batted .274 and stole 31 bases.Clay indicated he may appeal Lazos sentence, calling it unreasonable because Lazo offered to co-operate with investigators before he was indicted and had only a limited role in the extortion. For his part, Lazo apologized for his crimes through a Spanish interpreter.I am very repentant and remorseful for the crimes I have committed, Lazo said. I am so sorry I got involved in these issues._____Follow Curt Anderson on Twitter: http://twitter.com/MiamicurtFake Spurs Jerseys . Prof. Aina Christina Lundgren was being questioned on her expertise regarding how long it takes a person to digest food after eating. The testimony relates to an autopsy report on Steenkamps body that said she still had food in her stomach after she was killed by Pistorius, leading prosecutors to challenge his story that the couple last ate around eight hours before he shot her through a toilet door. An expert testifying for the prosecution said a persons stomach is normally empty of food six hours after eating and Steenkamp ate much later on the night of the killing and not in line with Pistorius story. Prosecutors say thats because the couple were up arguing late into the night before Pistorius shot Steenkamp multiple times in the midst of a heated fight through a toilet stall door in his bathroom. Pistorius says he mistook her for an intruder hiding behind the closed toilet stall door. He testified the couple had dinner at around 7 p.m. on the night she was killed, and they were in bed around 10 p.m. Pistorius shot Steenkamp after 3 a.m. on Feb. 14, 2013. Lundgren, who described herself as a specialist anesthetist, testified that there are a number of factors that could have delayed the digestion process in Steenkamp to explain the food found in her stomach, including that she was a pre-menopausal woman and had been sleeping. Lundgren was presented by the defence to try and undermine the testimony of pathologgist Prof.dddddddddddd Gert Saayman, who said it was his opinion that Steenkamp ate much later than Pistorius says, possibly even at around 1 a.m. when the runner claims they were in bed. Lundgren said it was difficult to be exact about the rate of digestion and it was "speculative to attempt to estimate when she had last eaten." Chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel cross-examined Lundgren and pointed to Saaymans findings that he could even identify vegetable and cheese matter in Steenkamps stomach. "Would you not have expected the digestive process to have caused the contents to be unrecognizable after eight hours?" Nel asked Lundgren. "I cant comment," she replied. "But he can, and he did," Nel said of Saaymans report. The state pathologist was present in the courtroom and Nel asserted that his evidence was "more probable." Replying to Nels questions, Lundgren said she was a clinician and unwilling to criticize Saayman, a pathologist. However, later on re-examination by chief defence lawyer Barry Roux, she said she did not agree with Saaymans assertion that Steenkamp ate at 1 a.m. or after. Pistorius lawyers also said in a statement Thursday that an offer to buy the villa where the Olympian killed Steenkamp had been accepted and the sale of the house was being processed. Pistorius is selling his home in the gated community in the South African capital Pretoria to help with his legal bills. His trial is now into its seventh week of testimony. Lawyer Brian Webber said they would not identify who was buying the house or the amount it was being sold for until the sale was finalized. Pistorius last year valued the house at about $450,000. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Rex Ryan saw enough to finally reveal the New York Jets worst-kept secret. Yes, Geno Smith -- and not Michael Vick -- will be the teams starting quarterback this season. "Hes done everything that weve asked," Ryan said after Smith threw a touchdown pass in the Jets 35-24 preseason loss to the Giants on Friday night. Smith had a solid preseason and took about 80 per cent of the snaps with the starters over Vick during training camp, making the announcement a mere formality. But Smith looked every bit like a cool and confident starting quarterback in this one, finishing 9 of 14 for 137 yards, including a 1-yard scoring toss to rookie Jace Amaro. "This is no slight to Mike Vick, believe me," Ryan said. "I wanted to come out of this knowing we had two really good quarterbacks that we can win games with, and I know, in my heart, that we have two we can win with." Smith was given every opportunity this summer to show he has progressed from a shaky rookie season that ended with three wins in the last four games. "I think hes taken off from where he left off," Ryan said. Smith, who threw 12 touchdown passes and 21 interceptions last year, was happy to get the official nod from Ryan. "Its a big deal," he said. "But nothings going to change for me. ... I think I did some good things, but Ive got work to do." Vick, who signed in March and immediately labeled Smith the starter, showed he can still make things happen on offence, too. He also threw for a touchdown with the Jets starters, and the defence mostly shut down Eli Manning before the Giants backups rallied. Vick replaced Smith to start the second half, and after a rough first series in which he was sacked and then lost a fumble, led an 11-play, 76-yard drive that was capped by a go-ahead 3-yard TD toss to Eric Decker against the Giants backups. Vick finished 4 of 5 for 34 yards in his two series against the Giants (4-0). Manning, still adjusting to new co-ordinator Ben McAdoos offence, struggled most of the way but hit Rueben Randle for a 15-yard touchdown with 5 seconds left in the first half. Manning was 12 of 21 for 139 yards, including his first scoring pass of the preseason. "The last drive of the first half was very welcomed, obviously," coach Tom Coughlin said. "We could finally move the ball. Eli made some great plays. I thought we ran the ball well early in the game, but didnt have anything to show for it." Much of Mannings production came on the scoring drive, during which he was 7 of 10 for 89 yards. He came in struggling, going a combined 7 of 16 for 49 yards in the Giants first three games. "We were able to get into a little rhythm and showed what we could do," wide receiver Victor Cruz said. "Its something to build on, no question." After some mild trash talk during the week spiced up the matchup, the Giants victory gave them bragging rights over their stadium co-inhabitants in the MetLife Bowl -- aka, the "Snoopy Bowl." Coughlin received the trophy that features a bronze football-playing Snoopy after the game, as well as $30,000 from MetLife to the teams charity of choice. The Jets (2-1) also received $20,000 for charity. Rookie running back Andre Williams, who fueled some of the hype for the game by saying the Giants are "the real New York team," had a 1-yard touchdown run with 6:12 left that put the Giants up 28-24. Giants backup Ryan Nassib threw three touchdown passes in the second half: 3 yards to Henry Hynoski, 39 yards to Preston Parker and 31 yards to Corey Washington. Nassib finished 8 of 12 for 103 yards. Third-stringer Matt Simms threw an 11-yard scoring pass to Greg Salas to give the Jets a short-lived 24-21 lead with 10:50 remaining. Vick started the second half with the starters and was sacked by Damontre Moore on his first play. He then fumbled a handoff on the next play -- with Moore recovering for the Giants. "I was just going out there and trying to humiliate the opponent in the worst way possible, when I realized it was Michael Vick," Moore said. "I didnt know it was a sack at first, then I realized that I just sacked Michael Vick." Nassib and the Giants took advantage, scoring five plays later on Hynoskis touchdown catch on which he reached over the goal line and touched the pylon. CLEVELAND -- Interim general manager David Griffin said before the Cavaliers game Sunday night that hed like to see a few more smiles from his team. Following Clevelands 91-83 overtime win over Memphis, there were happy faces all around the locker room. "The game is fun," said Kyrie Irving, who scored 28 points as Cavaliers won back-to-back games for the first time in a month. "Being out there, just competing at the highest level. At the end of the day, its just a game." The Cavaliers, who broke a six-game losing streak Friday night against Washington, have won both games since general manager Chris Grant was fired last week. Irving scored the final four points in regulation to tie it. Luol Dengs 3-pointer on the first possession of overtime put Cleveland ahead for good, 81-78. While a two-game winning streak wont remedy all the teams problems in an adversity-filled season, the Cavaliers want to seize on any positive momentum they can find. "Everybody was putting too much pressure on themselves," Irving said. "We needed to go out there and play basketball. Going out there the last two games, whether the game gets tight or gets away from you, it should be fun." Nick Calathes scored 17 points to lead Memphis, which has lost three of four since winning six straight. Deng began the overtime scoring with a 3-pointer from the corner as the shot clock was winding down. Baskets by Dion Waiters and Anderson Varejao, sandwiched around a 3-pointer by Calathes, left Cleveland with an 85-81 lead. A resounding dunk by Waiters and four free throws by Irving put the game away. "They had the two best players on the floor in Dion Waiters and Kyrie Irving," Grizzlies coach David Joerger said. "They really took the game over from start to finish." Joerger blamed the Grizzlies poor first half, in which they fell behind by 14 points, for the loss. "We slogged in the mud at the start tonight, which you cant do on the road," he said. James Johnson scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to help Memphis erase a nine-point deficit. Cleveland led 74-65 but was held scoreless for 4:54 as the Grizzlies took a 78-74 lead. Irving tied it with a layup with 18 seconds remaining and was fouled, but missed the free throw, giving Memphis the ball with 16.7 seconds left. Zach Randolph lost the ball while driving the lane and Waiters heave from just inside halfcourt hit off the backboard. Griffin met with the players at Sunday morning at the shootaround while owner Dan Gilbert spoke with them prior to the game. "I think it woke up a lot of people," Waiters said of Grants dismissal. "Me, I felt half of that was my fault, how we played. We just didnt come out right as a unit. I think it cost the man his job. If we had been playing the way we have the last two games hed probably still be here. We cant dwell on the past, weve got to continue to play the way weve been playing and keep it up." Waiters scored 18 points, and C.J. Miles added 14 for Cleveland. Johnson scored 15 points for Memphis. Randolph, who left the game in the second quarter to get three stitches to close a cut under his left eye, had 14 points. Calathes, playing in place of the injured Mike Conley, made his first six shots and was 7 of 9 from the field. Randolph went to the locker room late in the second quarter after taking an elbow in the face from Tristan Thompson while they were going for a rebound. Randolph was on the court for a couple of moments and asked for a towel to put to his face. He tapped hands with Thompson before jogging off the court with a team trainer. Randolph returned to start the third quarter. "Teams know we try to go inside to Zach and let him go to work, but weve got to do something with all five guys, not always depend on our horse down there," Said Memphis forward Tayshaun Prince. "We cant allow Zach to always be our hero. It puts us in a tough spot and it puts him in a tough spot." Deng started after missing Fridays game with the flu. LOUIS -- Ray Rice and Joe Flacco watched from home. Before the preseason finale, the Baltimore Ravens had one foot out the door. "Theres no need for an assessment for where were at," coach John Harbaugh said after a 24-21 loss to the St. Louis Rams on Thursday night with backups fighting for jobs on both sides. "Its right around the corner, weve been on Denver now for a while. "In reality, Im sure theyve done the same." Bobby Rainey, fourth on the Ravens depth chart at running back, scored his first two touchdowns of the preseason. "I tried to take care of stuff," said Rainey, who had 39 yards on 13 carries. "Ive got no regrets." The Rams (1-3) avoided their first winless preseason since 2002 on Chase Reynolds lone reception of the game, a 17-yarder from Austin Davis with 2:40 to go. They clinched it when Drew Thomas intercepted third-stringer Caleb Hanie at the 4 in the final minute. The Ravens (2-2) open the NFL season next Thursday night at Denver. Harbaugh typically sits all of his regulars for the final preseason game, and Hanie went the distance with second-stringer Tyrod Taylor held out. "It was just practice, basically," said Ravens wide receiver Marlon Brown, who scored on a 50-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter. "We just practiced the plays that we know how to execute." The ultimate goal for both teams was to get out of the finale unscathed. The only significant injury was to Ravens backup linebacker D.J. Bryant, who left with what the team called a significant knee injury late in the first half. "A lot of ligament damage but nothing he cant come back from," Harbaugh said. "Hell need surgery. Hes a talented guy, hes got a future." Neither side had much to say about cutdown day Saturday. "Its always hard," Harbaugh said. "Its always difficult choices. You have to do whats best for the team." The Rams, who were 7-8-1 in coach Jeff Fishers first season, open at home against Arizona Sept. 8. "I thought we had a really good traaining camp.dddddddddddd I thought we did some really good things during the preseason when we were on the field," quarterback Sam Bradford said. "Now, its full steam ahead and getting ready for Arizona next week." Attendance was announced at 53,364, although the 67,000-seat Edward Jones Dome appeared about one-third full for a sloppy show marred by six total turnovers. The Rams were whistled for 113 yards in penalties. "We had a nice little candid discussion at halftime about that," Fisher said. "The reality is most of the flags were directed at players who are not going to be on the field for us." Fisher opened with a handful of starters, including both first-round draft picks. Tavon Austins outing was damaged by one of the teams three fumbles in the first five minutes, and linebacker Alec Ogletree had two tackles. Rookie Zac Stacy scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter in a bid to secure the Rams backup running back job. St. Louis traded its last two picks in the draft to get Stacy, the career rushing leader at Vanderbilt who had 37 yards on 11 carries, and undrafted rookie Bennie Cunningham had 76 yards on eight carries in the second half. Isaiah Pead is suspended for the opener and fumbled for the second time in the preseason on the opening kickoff. The Rams recovered that one, but quickly coughed up two more to the Ravens with Brian Quick and Austin both losing their grip after 14-yard catches. Davis and Kellen Clemens both had strong games competing to be Sam Bradfords backup. Safety Matt Elam, the Ravens first-round pick, had a solid first half with a forced fumble and four tackles. "I had a lot of fun out there," Elam said. "I had the opportunity to play and I wanted to take advantage of that." St. Louis took its first lead on Nick Johnsons 4-yard catch early in the fourth quarter, and the Ravens answered 2:21 later on Browns 50-yard catch and run for a 21-17 lead. Rainey had opened the scoring with a 1-yard run in the first quarter and had an 8-yard run in the second. ' ' '

Hernandez (12-3) went eight innings, allowed one run, struck out eight and walked one in the Mariners 4-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves Tuesday. It was his 15th straight start -- dating back to May 18 -- in which he worked at least seven innings and allowed two runs or fewer, an on-going big-league record. Hernandez also tied Gaylord Perrys 1974 streak with Cleveland when he had 15 straight starts with at least seven innings and allowing two or fewer earned runs. Hernandez threw just 97 pitches without a lot of stressful innings. He wanted the chance at his first complete game in nearly two years but that was enough for McClendon. Fernando Rodney worked the ninth, allowed a run but earned his 31st save in 34 opportunities. "It was my decision," McClendon said. "Ill continue to do this. Ill continue to protect my players. Im trying to win meaningful games in September. I want Felix healthy and strong in September. "Im like Frank Sinatra, were doing it my way." Hernandez, who used to bluster and argue to remain in the game, said he has eased his resistance. "I appreciate that," he said. "He said, youre done. Im done." During his 15-game streak Hernandez is just 8-2. His teammates had scored just 10 runs over his previous five starts when he went 1-1 with three no-decisions. But a fourth-inning error by Braves second baseman Tommy La Stella contributed directly the Mariners go-ahead runs. With the score tie 1-all, two outs and runners on second and third, Chris Taylor popped up behind the first-base bag. La Stella camped under it, leaned back and it caromed off his glove. "I was frustrated," Taylor said. "I thought I was right on it. I just got underneath it. I knew guys were on so I wanted to get a hit. Luckily, he dropped it and I was able to get on second in scoring position." Both runners scored and Taylor advanced to second. He scored on Austin Jacksons single to left. The Braves have lost seven straight. "Its just a physical error and you cant do anything about it," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "And it did cost us tthose three runs that scored.dddddddddddd Sometimes its just the way stuffs going." Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager added, "thats what youre supposed to do. When you get an opportunity you take advantage of it. We were to get two runs on that one. Then Jackson got a big hit. Four runs with Felix going, thats a good combination. Alex Wood (7-9) worked six innings, allowing five hits, just one earned run, walked four and stuck out five. "I thought he (Wood) pitched terrific," Gonzalez said. "Getting a couple runs against Felix and you just cant recover." Hernandez lowered his earned run average to a league-leading 1.97. In Interleague play, he has a 17-7 record and is 5-0 with a 1.20 ERA over his last eight starts against National League teams. He has the best ever ERA in Interleague play 2.54. MONTREAL - If its not a must-win game, the Montreal Impacts home opener is certainly one they would very much like to win. After opening the Major League Soccer season with two tight losses on the road, the Impact will play host to the Seattle Sounders before more than 25,000 at Olympic Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It will be a first home game for new coach Frank Klopas, the first time Brossard, Que., native Patrice Bernier will play at home as team captain, and the last that star striker Marco Di Vaio will sit out from the three-game suspension he got for wading into a skirmish in the playoffs last October. "Its the third game of the season, but we need to start getting some points," former Chicago Fire boss Klopas said this week. "Its good to be home. "We definitely felt that we should have picked up some points on the road, but thats the game." The Impact opened the season March 8 with a 3-2 loss in Dallas marked by a harsh penalty awarded to the home team. They followed a week later with a 1-0 defeat in Houston. There was a feeling the team played better in the second game — that the defence was sharper, that better chances were created and that Di Vaios replacement Andrew Wenger looked more comfortable up front. "We have some momentum even if were 0-2," said Bernier, who replaced the departed Davy Arnaud as captain. "Its not like we played bad and got cleaned out. "We felt we progressed last game from the first game and now were coming home. We have to defend our home and weve been very good at home the last two years. This is a game that could send us in the right direction and give us a positive boost." They are up against a Seattle side (1-1-0) with a formidable attack, but which is coming off a 2-1 loss at home to Toronto FC on former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoes pair of first-half goals. The Sounders, old foes of the Impact from their A-League and United Soccer League days, have not beaten Montreal in MLS play. The Impact won 4-1 in Montreal in 2012 and opened the 2013 campaign with a 1-0 win in Seattle. But Seattle has been among the better away sides in MLS, with a 29-28-24 road record since they entered the league in 2009. Di Vaio and midfielder Andres Romero, both with three game suspensions, wont see action until a March 29 game in Philadelphia. In Di Vaios absence, winger Justin Mapp and attacking midfielder Felipe Martins have led the offence. The veteran Mapp was among their best players last season, but Felipe looks to have rebounded from a mediocre campaign and is looking more like the energetic playmaker he was as a rookie in 2012. He has yet to score, but leads the team with eight shots. "I had a few chances," he said. "But the hardest thing is to create chances and were doing that. "The only thing is we have to put it in the net, but that is going to come. Its not after one or two games you have to figure out whats going on. Its just soccer, no? One time a goal goes in and after that it comes natural." Klopas likes what hes seen of the Brazilian. "He missed the beginning of the season with injury last year and that was one reason his fitness level and sharpness werent the same," the coach said. "Hes a guy that sometimes doesnt get the points, but he helps the team in so many ways without the ball, with his work rate and stuff like that. "Ive been very pleased with him and I know he has a lot more room to grow." Bernier, coming off knee surgery, missed the season opener but got in 72 minutes in Houston. The team is still waiting for Bernier, Felipe and designated player Hernan Bernardello to all be at peak form to see what the centre of their midfield can do. Bernardello was injured shortly after signing last summer. The Impact are to play their first three home games at the Big O before moving outdoors to Saputo Stadium. Klopas coached Chicago against the Impact in Montreals first MLS game at Olympic Stadium in 2012, a 1-1 draw. "Its amazing that two years ago I was on the opposite side in the first game here, with a tremendous atmosphere," he said. "I hope its the same, only now theyre cheering for me and our team."
