NEW YORK -- On days Kyle Hendricks is on the mound, he can count on Javier Baez, his buddy from the minor leagues, for plenty of run support. Its a combo beleaguered Cubs fans can get excited about. Hendricks and two relievers held New York to four or fewer hits for the fifth straight game, Baez and Anthony Rizzo homered, and Chicago rallied for a 4-1 victory over the Mets on Monday. "When hes pitching and he got a good game, I got a good game, too," Baez said. Teammates at Triple-A Iowa for much of the season, Baez hit two homers in his third career game to help make Hendricks a winner in his fifth career start -- on Aug. 7. This time, Baezs mammoth two-run shot into the second deck in left field off Mets closer Jenrry Mejia put Chicago up 4-1. "Thats typical right there," Hendricks said of the homer. "Not really shocking for us." Hendricks (5-1) gave up three hits in seven innings, allowing only Lucas Dudas home run in the fourth. The right-hander won his fourth straight start -- yielding four earned runs over 29 1-3 innings. "I wasnt that sharp but then made that mistake to Duda and it kind of locked me in after that," Hendricks said. Neil Ramirez struck out two in a perfect eighth and Hector Rondon allowed a leadoff double but finished the four-hitter for his 18th save. The Cubs came back once Carlos Torres, making a spot start for Bartolo Colon, was done after five innings. Luis Valbuena, who had three hits, had a tying single in the sixth. Rizzo connected off Buddy Carlyle (1-1) in the eighth for his 28th homer. The Mets had only 16 hits but split the four-game series with the Cubs. The five-game run matches the clubs longest streak of games with no more than four hits. They also went five straight in 2004 and 1963. The only time since 1914 the Cubs gave up four or fewer hits in four straight games was in 1983. "Maybe theyre swinging too much," manager Terry Collins said. "Its trying not to do too much, just try to put the barrel on the baseball." The 41-year-old Colon had to return to the Dominican Republic, where his mother was sick, forcing the durable Torres to make his first start since Sept. 27. He yielded three hits. Colons winter ball team, the Cibao Eagles, confirmed later Monday Colons mother died. The Mets will place Colon on the bereavement list and recall right-hander Gonzalez Germen from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday. Torres became the first pitcher to start on no days rest since the Angels Billy Buckner did it June 25, 26 of last year. Torres threw nine pitches in facing two batters in the Mets 2-1 loss Sunday. TRAINERS ROOM Cubs: OF Chris Coghlan was out of the starting lineup. "Weve been pushing him pretty hard," manager Rick Renteria said. Coghlan has been playing with a sore left big toe. As a pinch hitter, he grounded out with the bases loaded in the eight. Mets: RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka could be activated from the DL to replace Colon. Matsuzaka (elbow inflammation) made a rehab start Saturday, allowing one run and three hits over six innings for Double-A Binghamton. UP NEXT Cubs: LHP Tsuyoshi Wada (2-1) will make his seventh big league start when Cubs host the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday. Mets: RHP Dillon Gee (4-5) is set for his first start at the Oakland Coliseum. He gave up four runs in four innings vs. the As at Citi Field on June 21, 2011. QUICK REVIEW Renteria challenged two plays, winning one and losing one. The total time for the two reviews was 1 minute, 23 seconds. Umpires needed 55 seconds to overturn a safe call on Matt den Dekkers attempted steal in the fourth. It only took 28 seconds to uphold an out call at first base in the fifth. GETTING BETTER The Cubs improved to 9-8 this month. Last year they were 8-20 in August. ZERO SUM Torres is first pitcher to strike out six on zero rest since the Cubs Steve Wilson struck out 10 on Sept. 10, 1989. He also is the first to throw at least five shutout innings on no rest since Philadelphias Bruce Ruffin went eight scoreless on June 21, 1991. Stitched Mariners Jerseys . The Wizards gave up two seldom-used players — forward Jan Vesely and point guard Eric Maynor. Vesely goes to the Nuggets, while Maynor gets shipped to the 76ers. Philadelphia receives two second-round draft picks, one from the Wizards in 2015 and one from the Nuggets in 2016. Seattle Mariners Store . A spokeswoman for the NLRB says its "a very incremental move" and does not necessarily indicate the board is close to a finding in the case. NFL owners filed an unfair labour charge against the players union in February, arguing that the union was not negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement in good faith. https://www.cheapmariners.com/1045k-pat-borders-jersey-mariners.html .Heres Ralph the Dog with the crew here at TSN jumping into the James Duthie TradeCentre selfie: Happy to drop by! Eller scored the midway through the third period after Dallas scored twice to tie it, leading Canadiens to a 6-4 win over the Stars on Thursday night. Tim Lopes Mariners Jersey . The Kings paraded the Stanley Cup through downtown Los Angeles on Monday to celebrate their second NHL title in three seasons.PITTSBURGH -- The steady stream of bold-faced names heading to injured reserve shows no signs of abating for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Thankfully for the Penguins, neither is Sidney Crosby. Crosbys 19th goal of the season broke a tie with just over 6 minutes remaining and Pittsburgh edged the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 on Monday night for their fourth straight victory. Chris Conner and Brandon Sutter also scored for the Penguins, who were playing without a number of regulars, including forward Evgeni Malkin. "We keep finding ways," Crosby said. "A lot has to do with the way the (new guys) are playing." Pittsburgh took the ice with a handful of players who have spent the majority of the season at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League and only one defenceman -- Matt Niskanen -- with more than one year of NHL experience. It hardly mattered on a night the Penguins kept the speedy Maple Leafs in check. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 25 shots for Pittsburgh to improve to 27-3 in his past 30 home starts. Pittsburgh has won four straight and nine of 10. "Its a pretty unique situation," Niskanen said. "One rookie and five young guys playing. ... These guys have been coming up and playing with confidence and doing a good job. Thats exciting for the organization." Morgan Rielly scored the first goal of his career for the Maple Leafs. Jonathan Bernier made 28 saves, but couldnt stop Toronto from losing for the fourth time in its past five games. "We just werent sharp," Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said. The Penguins have a firm grip on the top of the Metropolitan Division despite a series of injuries to high-profile players. Kris Letang joined fellow defenceman Brooks Orpik (concussion), Paul Martin (broken leg) and Rob Scuderi (broken ankle) on the IR Monday with an upper-body injury of his own, forcing coach Dan Bylsma to get creative with his pairings. Rookie Philip Samuelsson, whose father Ulf won a pair of Stanley Cups with the Penguins in the early 1990s, made his NHL debut against the Maple Leafs. The younger Samuelsson received a quick lesson from his teammates on the level of expectation from Brian Dumoulin, playing in just the second game of his career. Dumoulin helped give the Penguins a quick 1-0 lead, collectiing the puck near the point then firing it on net, allowing Conner to jab it by Bernier for his third goal of the season 39 seconds into the game.dddddddddddd The tally seemed to embolden Pittsburgh, which controlled play for long stretches in the first period, keeping Bernier busy while the defence did a fine job of neutralizing Torontos speedy counterattack. The Maple Leafs tied it 6:03 into the second as Rielly, the fifth overall pick in the 2012 draft, skated through the Pittsburgh zone and beat Fleury over the goaltenders right shoulder for the highly regarded defencemans first career goal. The power-play score ended the Penguins streak of 18 consecutive penalty kills, though the score had less to do with any kind of breakdown and more to do with Riellys wicked wrist shot. Toronto kept the pressure on well into the third period, but Pittsburgh regained control after killing off an illegal check to the head penalty on Robert Bortuzzo, who levelled Maple Leaf forward Jerry DAmigo during a collision near centre ice. The 6-foot-4 defenceman, who has struggled to crack the lineup, shook off the penalty and even picked up his first point of the season on Crosbys winner. The Maple Leafs won the draw deep in their zone but Bortuzzo knocked down the clearing attempt then fed the puck up the wall to Pascal Dupuis, who slipped a quick pass to Crosby between the circles. "There was a lot of room there," Crosby said. "(Dupuis) made a great pass on my tape and I found the back of the net. Sutters short-handed empty-net goal with 3 seconds left sealed it and the Penguins remained hot while the Maple Leafs couldnt back up a promising 7-3 romp over defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago on Saturday night. "We were a little inconsistent, but we did do some good things," Torontos Dion Phaneuf said. "Weve got to capitalize on the power play and do some things better." NOTES: Toronto finished 1 of 5 on the power play. ... The Penguins are 13-1 when leading after the first period. ... Pittsburgh has won eight straight games at Consol Energy Center. ... The Maple Leafs begin a three-game homestand on Tuesday against Florida. ... Pittsburgh forward Jason Megna left with a lower body injury and did not return. He is not expected to play Wednesday when the Penguins face the Rangers in New York. ' ' '
