CHICAGO -- Conor Gillaspie leads the Chicago White Sox with a .311 batting average, and on Sunday the third baseman led them to a win with a rare burst of power. Gillaspie hit his first grand slam and Jordan Danks added a two-run shot to cap a six-run first inning, and the White Sox held on to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-5. Gillaspie connected for just his fifth homer and Danks hit his second off Torontos Drew Hutchison (8-11), who lost for the fifth time in seven decisions. Danks nailed a 2-2 pitch off the 23-year-old Blue Jays right-hander, who pitched seven innings and limited the White Sox to one run after the first. "It was just through the hands with two strikes and put it in play hard," Gillaspie said. "You know sometimes you get them up in the air, sometimes you miss them. "It was definitely a good jump-start to the game." Manager Robin Ventura wasnt surprised by Gillaspie deep drive to right-centre field. "Its not like you wouldnt expect him to hit home runs, but hes just a line drive hitter," Ventura said. "When he hits it good, its going to go." Chicago right-hander Scott Carroll (5-7) went 5 2-3 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks. Torontos Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run homer, his 27th this season and first since returning from the disabled list on Friday. The Blue Jays have lost five of six and 11 of 15 to fall 7 1/2 games behind Baltimore in the AL East and four behind Seattle in the AL wild card race. Hutchison has given up six runs or more in four of his last seven starts. "I had two outs, and I had two strikes," Hutchison said of the Gillaspies at-bat. "I had a good chance to get through the inning with no runs and I gave up six, and put us in a big hole." Danks added a third RBI on a sac fly in the sixth. Jake Petricka earned his ninth save in 12 chances after loading the bases in the ninth. "It wasnt like we didnt have any shots," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "We just couldnt get that big hit." Encarnacion golfed his homer just into the left field bullpen in the fifth as Toronto cut it to 6-4. Pinch-hitter Dioner Navarro singled in a run in the sixth to make it 6-5. TRAINERS ROOM Toronto: RHP Kyle Drabek, 7-7 with a 4.00 ERA in Triple-A Buffalo, rejoined the Blue Jays bullpen on Sunday. Drabek is 8-15 in stints over four previous seasons with Toronto, both as a starter and reliever. He last pitched for the Blue Jays on Sept. 25, 2013. Veteran 1B Dan Johnson began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday, going 0 for 3 with an RBI. Hes played 13 games with the Blues Jays this season and was put on the DL with a strained left hamstring. TOP PRIZE White Sox: LHP Carlos Rodon, the third overall pick in this years MLB draft and one of Chicagos top prospects, is scheduled make his Triple-A debut with Charlotte on Tuesday. UP NEXT Blue Jays: LHP J.A. Happ (8-7, 4.20) faces Brewers RHP Mike Fiers (2-1, 1.29) at Milwaukee on Tuesday. Fiers had a career-high 14 strikeouts in his last start, his second since his recall from the minors. White Sox: LHP Chris Sale (10-2, 2.01) will face Baltimore RHP Bud Norris (10-7, 3.75) in Chicago on Monday to start a three-game series. Following an off-day on Thursday, Baltimore has a three-game set against the Cubs at Wrigley Field SETTING AVI-SAIL Although the White Sox are out of contention, the return of speedy, 23-year-old Avisail Garcia will give them a boost. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Venezuelan, acquired last season from Detroit as part of a three-way deal involving Boston, also has the power to fit in the middle of the lineup. His next steps: Consistency and playing a full major league season, according to manager Robin Ventura. "Theres a lot of learning curve that hell have," Ventura said. "I think its similar to what Joses (Abreu) gone through this season." Cheap NBA Jerseys . Hardy finally got in on the fun Saturday, against a likely opponent. NEW YORK -- Sean Doolittle wasnt surprised at all by the Oakland As offensive outburst in the 10th inning. Brandon Moss hit his second homer of the game leading off the 10th, and the Oakland Athletics rallied for a 5-2 victory over the New York Yankees on Tuesday night. The majors best run-producing offence then got an RBI double from Jed Lowrie and a run-scoring single from Kyle Blanks to open a big lead for Oaklands suspect back end of the bullpen. "The way the guys were swinging in the 10th inning, it was like they could smell the victory and found a way to get it done," the As reliever said. "Thats typical Oakland As baseball." Returning to the lineup after missing two games with a strained right calf, Moss drilled a full-count pitch from Adam Warren (1-3) into the second deck down the right field line for his 15th homer. That gave the AL West-leading As their first lead in a game that was delayed more than an hour at the start by rain. "We have a very confident offence," Moss said. Doolittle finished off the As fourth straight win with a perfect 10th for his sixth save. The left-hander extended his scoreless streak to 15 1-3 innings. Dan Otero (5-1) pitched an inning for the As, who improved to 7-13 when trailing after seven innings. Pinch-hitter Stephen Vogt hit a tying double off Dellin Betances with two outs in the eighth inning. Betances walked Albert Callaspo before Vogt drilled a full-count pitch into the right-centre gap. "That at-bat was incredible ... because Betances, he is a really good reliever," Moss said. "I felt like that pretty much did it for us." Betances had not walked a batter over his previous 10 appearances (15 1-3 innings). "I felt good. I just think the two out walk hurt, I had him in my head and I just did not put him away," Betances said. "I think from there I just fell behind on Vogt and just threw him a good pitch to hit. I think Callaspo, that at-bat was more frustrating." The injury-depleted Yankees came in looking hardly like the Bronx Bombers they are expected to be. With an opening-day payroll about $120 million moree than the As, New York had hit just five homers in 15 games and none in the two Mark Teixeira sat with inflammation in his surgically repaired right wrist.dddddddddddd Teixeira, though, woke up pain-free Tuesday and manager Joe Girardi made the switch-hitter the cleanup batter. Teixeira drove in New Yorks two runs, homering in the sixth for a 2-1 lead. "He said he was fine," Girardi said. "You know you kind of keep your fingers crossed and hope he feels good tomorrow." In contrast, Moss drive off Hiroki Kuroda into Monument Park leading off the fifth gave the slugging As at least one long ball in 11 straight games. A rainbow arcing high above the scoreboard in centre field before the rain-delayed first pitch appeared to be a good omen for New York, which grabbed a quick lead. Scott Kazmir needed four batters to warm up after a storm pushed back the start 1 hour, 12 minutes. Brett Gardner singled leading off. After Derek Jeter struck out, Jacoby Ellsbury singled and Teixeira dunked a blooper inside the right field line for a 1-0 lead. After that, Kazmir retired 16 of 17 -- including four Ks in a row -- before Teixeira sent a drive into the As bullpen in left-centre for his 10th homer -- the second swinging from the right side -- and a 2-1 lead. "He just ran out of pitches," Melvin explained why he lifted Kazmir when he did. NOTES: The As improved to 11-3 against New York since July 19, 2012. ...
