Facing a diminished role with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Richie Hall took on the challenge of becoming the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive co-ordinator. Hall served as Saskatchewans defensive co-ordinator the last four seasons. Saskatchewans defence allowed the fewest touchdowns in the CFL while recording the most interceptions to anchor the Riders Grey Cup run in 2013. But after Saskatchewan posted a 10-8 record last season, head coach Corey Chamblin said in December that Hall wouldnt continue as the Riders defensive co-ordinator. Chamblin indicated Hall would be offered another role within the organization. Instead, Hall accepted the task of rebuilding a Winnipeg defence that allowed a CFL-worst 135.9 yards rushing per game. As a player, in all my years of coaching, the emphasis has always been weve got to stop the run, Hall told reporters during a conference call. If youre able to control the run, youre able to control the line of scrimmage and everything starts up in the trenches. You have to be able to counter everything they do. If a team is able to run the ball effectively against you, it can dictate the flow of the game. Defensively, we want to be able to dictate the flow of the game. Hall, 54, a native of San Antonio, has spent all but two of his 20 years coaching in the CFL with Saskatchewans defence. Hall was Edmontons head coach in 2009 and 2010 before returning to Regina, where hed also won Grey Cups in 89 as a player and 07 as the defensive co-ordinator. Hall replaces Gary Etcheverry, who was fired after just one season overseeing Winnipegs defence. The Blue Bombers missed the playoffs with a 7-11 record under rookie head coach Mike OShea. Richie has always had a good plan, OShea said. Theres no time that hes entered the game without a good plan. His players always feel solid about the plan. Hes also got the ability to adjust. His knowledge of our game and of the opposition, the various co-ordinators in our game, theres nothing Richie hasnt seen or dealt with. With former Hamilton head coach Marcel Bellefeuille returning as offensive co-ordinator, OShea feels well supported by the experience of his two assistants. I say this to the coaching staff when we first get together If you see me tripping, catch me, OShea said. There are mistakes that are going to be made and its up to all of us to make sure that we dont make those mistakes and they dont cost us games. First-year starter Drew Willy, the CFLs third-ranked passer with 3,769 yards, gave Winnipegs offence credibility and the defence did finish the season ranked second against the pass. But only expansion Ottawa (37) had fewer sacks than the Bombers (43), who also allowed a CFL-high 481 points. Chamblin told reporters in Regina last month he took over Saskatchewans defence for the West Division semifinal against Edmonton, a game the Riders lost 18-10 despite not allowing an offensive touchdown. OShea, a former all-star linebacker, insisted Hall would have freedom to implement his defensive packages with the Blue Bombers. One of the things I firmly believe in is you hire men youre going to trust and let them coach, he said. I wont be sticking my fingers in to upset the apple cart. Richie is going to have his systems. Hes going to put the time in to come up with a great plan. As head coach, he and I are going to talk about that plan before the game. Ill have input and there will be times I get on the headset and Ill talk about the flow of the game and what Id like to see. My preference is always to let the coaches coach. Thats what I hired him for. Hall was a CFL all-star as a defensive back in the 1980s with both Calgary and Saskatchewan. He says hell commute for now between Winnipeg and Regina, where his wife, Helen, is employed. After so many years of wearing green and white, Hall acknowledged it will be an adjustment wearing different colours on what was once an enemy football field. I think its going to be strange but you also understand its football, he said. You become committed to the jersey you put on. Thats the life of a coach, thats the life of a professional athlete. But Portland, which ended last season with a 13-game losing streak, is off to a 5-2 start and taking a hard look at its early success -- with an eye on improvement. After a 109-103 victory over Detroit on Monday, the Blazers were concerned by a late push by the Pistons that brought them within three points after Portland had built a 13-point, second-half lead. "We cant relax and let a team get back like that," Nicolas Batum said. Robin Lopez warned about being complacent: "Thats something we need to fend off. We need to be mentally tougher, mentally stronger. " But Damian Lillard, who rebounded from a rough shooting night in the Blazers previous game to score 25 points, said this season Portland is better equipped to fight off late opponent runs. "Last year some games wed have an answer and get a big win and other times wed let the game get away from us," Lillard said. "Now weve got a different level of confidence in those situations and we expect to win those games." Brandon Jennings had 28 points and four rebounds for Detroit. Acquired by the Pistons in an off-season sign-and-trade with Milwaukee, Jennings came into the game the game needing one rebound for 1,000 in his career, and one point for 5,000. Jennings alley-oop layup from Rodney Stuckey pulled the Pistons within 107-103 with 1:28 left. After he stole the ball from Lillard and was fouled by Batum, Jennings drove to the basket but missed a layup and fouled Lillard on the rebound. Lillard made free throws for the final margin and Stuckey missed a 3-pointer on the other end. "Its very difficult. We knew coming in they were a team that takes a lot of 3s," Jennings said. "They were on fire tonight." The Blazers made 11 3-pointers, including five from Lillard. It was Portlands sixth straight victory at home over the Pistons. The Trail Blazers were coming off a pair of victories over the Sacramento Kings in a home-and-away back-to-back. Lillard, last seasons NBA Rookie of the Year, was 1 of 15 from the floor with four points in the Blazers 96-85 victory on Saturday night. &quoot; When players like that have a bad game you know they rarely have two consecutive bad games," Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks said.dddddddddddd"Hes a confident player and shooter and tonight he showed that." Portland was one of just five teams in the NBA with two players averaging more than 20 points. LaMarcus Aldridge was averaging 23.3 points and Lillard was averaging 20.5 heading into the game. Aldridge finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds against Detroit. His 15-footer that put the Blazers out in front 20-11 in the first quarter. Portland held onto the lead through the second, going up 38-30 on Dorell Wrights layup. Detroit came back with a 13-4 run capped by Stuckeys 3-pointer to pull ahead 43-42. Greg Monroes jumper knotted the score at 51 but Lillard answered with a 3-pointer and the Blazers went on to lead 58-55 at the half. Aldridge made an acrobatic layup and Joel Freeland added a basket to give the Blazers a 77-70 lead late in the third quarter. Andre Drummonds alley-oop dunk narrowed it to 83-80 for the Pistons to open the fourth quarter. Lopezs slam off Batums no-look pass with 4:29 left gave the Blazers their biggest lead of the game at 104-92. Lopez, acquired by the Blazers in a three-team trade this summer from New Orleans, finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Afterward, Aldridge joked: "His mom is here. Shes staying the rest of the season." Charlie Villanueva made his season debut for the Pistons after returning from a shoulder injury and had two points. Drummond had 16 points and 16 rebounds. Detroit was coming off a 119-110 loss to Oklahoma City on Friday night. Jennings had his first double-double with the Pistons with 22 points and 11 assists against the Thunder. Notes: Cheeks was coach of the Blazers for three-plus seasons from 2001-05. ... Rasheed Wallace, who played for the Blazers from 1996-2004, is an assistant on Cheeks staff. ... The Blazers and the Pistons split their series last season, with each team winning at home. ...
