CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Maybe its good this one got suspended. Gave everybody a chance to dry off a bit, catch their breath and let those unbelievable numbers start to sink in. Ten homers in only six innings. Three sets of back-to-back homers, tying a record. The most combined homers in a major league game since 2006. And the Pirates and Reds still have a long way to go. Neil Walker and Gaby Sanchez hit back-to-back homers twice, and the Pirates and Reds hit 10 in all before rain forced a suspension after six innings with the score tied 7-all Monday night. "I saw a lot of crazy stuff in Coors Field over the years," said Pirates manager Clint Hurdle, who managed in Colorado for eight years. "I spent a lot of years there, saw a lot of homers, saw a lot of weather. "This was as good as any of that, jammed into one evening." The shocking slugfest will resume on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the top of the seventh inning. Conditions are expected to be drier but much colder. Not that the weather seems to matter much when these two rivals get together. "Ive never seen anything like that," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "The way we got started, one team going in front of the other with home runs. Ive seen a lot of home runs hit, but not in those conditions. You wouldnt imagine they would carry that far." Pittsburgh hit six solo shots and Cincinnati had four homers, most of them into a heavy rain. Already, its the most homers in a major league game since 2006 and the most combined homers for a game in Great American Ball Parks 12-year history. Pittsburgh had three sets of back-to-back homers, only the third time thats happened in major league history. The game was suspended following a 1-hour, 38-minute delay, the second time in less than a year that a game was suspended in Cincinnati. The Reds and Phillies were scoreless last April 16 in the middle of the ninth inning when play was halted because of rain, and Cincinnati won 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth the following day. The Ohio River rivals were known more for trading hit-by-pitches last season. The Pirates and Reds plunked each other 28 times -- most in the majors -- while nailing down the two NL wild-card spots. Their first matchup of 2014 was more swing-away than get-out-of-the-way. Ten of the 17 combined hits so far have cleared the wall. All but one of the 14 runs has come on a homer. "It wouldnt be a Pittsburgh-Cincinnati game without some drama," Walker said. Pittsburgh went back-to-back three times. Walker and Sanchez did it in the second inning off Homer Bailey and again in the sixth off J.J. Hoover. Starling Marte and Travis Snider teamed up in the fifth off Bailey. It was only the third time in major league history that a team had three sets of back-to-back homers in a game, according to STATS. The others: Cincinnati against the Braves in 1956, and Boston against the Yankees in 1977. "I certainly wouldnt think that I would find my way attached to a home run record," Walker said. "The games not even over yet, so I dont know how to express whats going on. But thats pretty cool." Both teams had a chance to take a lead with the rain coming down heavier and the field getting muddier. The starters and bullpens failed to hold on. Wandy Rodriguez gave up Joey Vottos two-out homer in the bottom of the fifth inning, putting Cincinnati up 6-5. The umpires inspected the infield, called for dry dirt and decided to continue. Walker and Sanchez connected again off Hoover for a 7-6 lead in the sixth. It was only the second time that two Pirates went back-to-back twice in a game, according to STATS. Toby Atwell and Jerry Lynch also did it against the Reds on April 27, 1954. Devin Mesoracos solo shot off Bryan Morris tied it at 7 in the bottom of the sixth. It was the first time since June 18, 2006, that two major league teams combined for 10 homers in a game -- the Tigers hit eight and the Cubs three at Wrigley Field that day. Something about Great American turns the Pirates into power hitters. They also hit six homers in Cincinnati last Sept. 28 during an 8-3 win that clinched home-field advantage for the NL wild-card game. Then they beat the Reds at PNC Park in the one-game playoff. Pittsburgh has 14 homers in its last three games at Great American, four of them by Walker. NOTES: Several hundred dogs were in the stands with their owners as part of an annual pet promotion. ... Phillies Jerseys 2019 . - Hitting was supposed to be the Pittsburgh Pirates weakness coming into the season yet they lead the major leagues in home runs through the first 16 games of the season. A knee to the thigh might have stung him the most, but his sixth straight double-double made up for the brief burst of pain. The Bruins win in OT, the Wild dominate in a 2-1 win and the Kings tell the Sharks to put away the brooms. Scott Cullen has notes on Tatar, Pominville, Hishon, Brown, Voynov and more. GETTING IGGY WITH IT Jarome Iginla deflected a Dougie Hamilton wrist shot off Red Wings D Danny DeKeyser for the overtime winner in the Bruins 3-2 Game Four victory. Boston leads the series three games to one. The night started right for the Red Wings, with goals scored by new fathers Pavel Datsyuk and Niklas Kronwall (who assisted on each others goals) to give the home side a 2-0 lead, but Torey Krug and Milan Lucic scored to tie the game. Detroit had good news and bad news on the lineup front coming into the game. LW Henrik Zetterberg was deemed ready to play -- his first game since February 8 -- and he logged 19:34 of ice time. The bad news, coming in, was that starting goaltender Jimmy Howard was unable to play because of the flu, leaving Jonas Gustavsson to handle the job. Gustavsson played well, stopping 37 of 40 Bruins shots, and the winning goal was a bad bounce off his defenceman, not something for which he should take blame. Forced to play from behind, the Bruins ended up with better possession stats over the course of the game, with their second and third lines both getting more than two-thirds of the even-strength shot attempts when they were on the ice. Bruins D Matt Bartkowski tied for the team lead with six hits in Game Four and his 26:40 of ice time ranked second on the team, behind Zdeno Chara. Red Wings LW Tomas Tatar had a game-high eight shots on goal in 14:41 of ice time. The loss leaves the Red Wings in a 3-1 hole, a deficit that will be very difficult to overcome, particularly with their inability to score. Tatar, Gustav Nyquist and Riley Sheahan were three of the Wings most important forwards this season and that trio has yet to record a point through four games. A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE The final score of Game Four between the Colorado Avalanche and Minnesota Wild was a 2-1 Wild win, which would denote a close game, but it really wasnt as close as the score appeared. The Wild outshot the Avalanche 32-12 (47-19 in shot attempts), so it was a relatively easy game for Minnesota G Darcy Kuemper, stopping 11 shots to earn the win. Leading the way for Minnesota was the line of Zach Parise, Mikael Granlund and Jason Pominville, as all three were on for more than 80% of the shot attempts.dddddddddddd Pominville was on the ice for 22 5-on-5 shot attempts for and two against. Coming into Game Four, the Avalanche knew they would be in tough, missing D Tyson Barrie, and they clearly missed Barries ability to move the puck. Ryan Wilson, who was inserted into the Avalanche lineup, was on the ice for 2-of-16 (12.5%) shot attempts at 5-on-5. The series is even and going back to Colorado, but the signs are tilting in the direction of the Wild. Not only are the Avs missing Barrie and C Matt Duchene, but Minnesota has been the most dominant possession team (and Colorado the mirror image) to this point in the first round. In a bit of a feel-good story for the Avalanche, C Joey Hishon, a first-round pick in 2010, made his NHL debut. Hishon suffered a concussion at the 2011 Memorial Cup and has battled injuries since, but he played 6:31 for the Avs in Game Four, getting time on the power play to accompany sporadic fourth-line shifts. STAYING ALIVE Facing elimination, the Los Angeles Kings avoided the sweep with a 6-3 win over the San Jose Sharks. Marian Gaborik and Justin Williams each scored a pair of goals for the Kings, while rookie RW Tyler Toffoli added a goal and an assist. Kings captain Dustin Brown also had a goal and an assist, along with a game-high 10 hits, though he had the worst possession stats of any Kings forward. The Sharks outshot the Kings, 39-31 (43-37 5-on-5 shot attempts), while the defence tandem of Robyn Regehr and Slava Voynov was eaten up. With Voynov on the ice, the Kings had 25% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. With Voynov off the ice, the Kings held 55.4% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. Sharks G Antti Niemi was chased from the net after surrendering five goals on 26 shots. Alex Stalock only needed to make four saves in 17:46 of action. Sharks LW Patrick Marleau picked up a couple of assists, giving him seven points through four games. Even though the Kings managed to stave off elimination, they have a tall order to catch the Sharks in this series, heading back to San Jose for Game Five and coming out second-best in the series puck possession battle.
