The Winnipeg Goldeyes took a lead into the ninth inning on Tuesday night and lost in 11. Wednesday night, they turned the tables on the St. Paul Saints. Luis Alen singled in the bottom of the ninth to drive home the winning run as the Goldeyes came back from 2-1 deficit with two runs in the ninth to grab a walk-off 3-2 win over the Saints. It was a terrific ball game in front of 5,011 at Shaw Park, as Goldeyes starter Pete Gehle and Saints starter Anthony Clagget battled for eight innings. Claggett gave up one run on five hits over eight complete innings, while Gehle allowed just two runs on six hits through 7.2 innings. With the win, the Goldeyes avenged Tuesday nights series-opening loss to St. Paul, a 9-8 heartbreaker. In that one, Winnipeg led 8-7 heading into the ninth and gave up one in the ninth and lost on an unearned run in the 11th. The Goldeyes also put a stop to a three-game losing streak and improved to 22-21 on the season. "This was a big win for our ball club, but an even bigger win for our pitching staff," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "No matter how good our bullpen has been, we cant keep going into the late innings down a run or ahead by just a run. Eventually, these guys are going to give up a run. Theyre only human. Tonight, we put together a great ninth inning and got an important win. "And Pete (Gehle) was awesome. He pitched an awesome ball game for us tonight." St. Paul scored a run in the fourth as Joey Becker doubled and eventually came around to score on a fielders choice groundout by Brandon Tripp. Jose Hernandez made it 2-0 on a solo homer in the seventh. Winnipegs first run came in the bottom of the seventh when Josh Mazzola doubled and came home on an RBI double by Luis Alen. But until the ninth, with closer Matt Meyer on the mound, the Goldeyes just couldnt mount a consistent offensive attack against Claggett. "Weve been getting great pitching and great defense all year," said Forney. "We didnt do much offensively for eight innings tonight, but the guys ground it out. Thats why you play the whole nine innings. Our hitters kept battling, had some good at bats and won a ball game. It was a big win for us." Allen Caldwell (1-0, 1.23 ERA) got the win in relief of Gehle, who really was outstanding. Meyer (4-4, 3.22 ERA) suffered the loss in relief of Claggett who was also terrific. Winners of 15 straight, with a healthy roster, the Spurs have overtaken the Clippers and Oklahoma City Thunder for the number one ranking.NEW YORK, N.Y. - The New York Jets are close to an agreement with Arizona Cardinals defensive co-ordinator Todd Bowles to make him their head coach, according to two people with knowledge of the negotiations.Bowles told ESPN in a text that he was taking the job, but the people told The Associated Press that no agreement had been completed as of late Tuesday night. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been finalized. Its heading there, one of the people said, and it could be completed as early as Wednesday morning.A few hours after hiring Mike Maccagnan as their general manager, the Jets were closing in on signing the 51-year-old Bowles to replace Rex Ryan, who was fired, along with GM John Idzik, on Dec. 29 after six seasons. Bowles, a highly sought candidate after leading Arizonas defence the last two seasons, had a second interview Tuesday with owner Woody Johnson and consultants Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf — along with Maccagnan — and apparently impressed the Jets enough to move forward. The team cancelled a scheduled interview with Carolina defensive co-ordinator Sean McDermott that was set for Wednesday. Bowles also called off a second meeting with the Atlanta Falcons for their head coaching vacancy that was scheduled for Wednesday. It was believed that Seattle defensive co-ordinator Dan Quinn was the frontt-runner for the job, but teams arent allowed to meet with him again until the Seahawks are eliminated or during the bye week before the Super Bowl.dddddddddddd Instead of waiting for Quinn, the Jets brought Bowles back and worked to sign him to a deal.It will be a homecoming of sorts for Bowles, who is a native of Elizabeth, New Jersey. He also served as the Jets defensive backs coach under then-coach Al Groh during the 2000 season.Bowles played defensive back for eight seasons in the NFL, including starting for Washington in the Super Bowl in 1988.With the Jets, Bowles will inherit a solid defensive front seven — which was always Ryans primary focus — with rising stars in defensive linemen Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson. The secondary, however, needs a major overhaul. After several stops as a coach at the college and pro levels, Bowles was hired as the Miami Dolphins assistant head coach and secondary coach from 2008-11. He served as the teams interim head coach for the final three games of the 2011 season, going 2-1 after Tony Sparano was fired.Bowles went to Philadelphia in 2012 as the Eagles secondary coach, but was elevated to defensive co-ordinator when the team dismissed Juan Castillo. After that season, Bowles was hired as Arizonas defensive co-ordinator.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
