MINSK, Belarus -- Defenceman Ryan Ellis scored in overtime to give Canada a 3-2 comeback victory over defending champion Sweden at the at the ice hockey world championship on Sunday, while two goals from Tyler Johnson lifted the United States 3-1 over Finland. In the late games, Russia blanked Germany 3-0 for its sixth straight victory of the tournament and the Czech Republic overcame Norway 1-0. After a stunning loss to France in its tournament opener, Canada has answered with five consecutive wins and took the lead in Group A ahead of Sweden with one more game to play before the knockout stage. Ellis netted 2:38 into overtime on a breakaway after second-period goals from Brayden Schenn and captain Kevin Bieksa on a power play erased Swedens 2-0 lead. "Good play by (Mark) Scheifele," Ellis said about his teammate, who assisted with his goal. "The patience from Scheifele was unbelievable for such a young guy. He put it right on my tape and I just had to touch it." Joakim Lindstrom and Linus Klasen scored the Swedish goals. Swedish goaltender Anders Nilsson saved a penalty shot by Jonathan Huberdeau in the first period. In the other early game, Johnson scored in the third to make it 2-0 with a wrist shot and added his second into an empty net with 46 seconds left for the U.S. to move into the second place in Group B. Russias victory then secured the Americans a place among the top four teams which advance to the quarterfinals from each group. "It was a good game by our team," Johnson said. "Obviously, it was a must win for us to advance." Brock Nelson opened the scoring just 19 seconds into the game when goaltender Pekka Rinne wanted to play the puck behind his goal but it deflected off the boards to Nelson right in front of the empty net to knock it in. "It was a crazy bounce," Nelson said. "Youve got to be ready for anything. It was a good start for us. We did a solid job of playing smart defensively in this game compared with some of the previous (ones)." Tuukka Mantyla cut the U.S. lead to 2-1 with 3:14 remaining in regulation. Germany held Russia at bay for two periods before Vadim Shipachyov finally netted 3:58 into the third on a power play. Sergei Shirokov added the second and Viktor Tikhonov scored into an empty net for his seventh goal in Minsk. Russias 19-year-old goalie Andrei Vasilevski stopped 27 shots for the shutout. Russias star forward Alex Ovechkin left the ice midway through the third with an apparent leg injury. Vladimir Sobotka scored the lone goal 39 seconds into the game for the Czechs to move to the third position in Group A. Norway is tied for fourth with France and Slovakia. Czech goaltender Alexander Salak saved a penalty shot in the second and made 21 saves for the shutout. Jamie Vardy Jersey .C. -- Ryan Sproul scored the winner late in double overtime to lift the Grand Rapids Griffins to a 2-1 win over the Abbotsford Heat on Friday in Game 1 of their American Hockey League playoff series. Phil Jones England Jersey . There will be no Down Under four-peat for Djokovic, as the eighth-seeded Swiss slugger Wawrinka outlasted the second seed 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 9-7 at Melbourne Parks Rod Laver Arena in yet another five-set thriller in their burgeoning rivalry. http://www.englandsoccerpro.com/Ashley-Young-England-Jersey/ .com) - The fading Ottawa Senators have a chance to make up some ground in the playoff race on Tuesday night as they play host to the New York Rangers. Harry Kane Jersey . The Argentina striker has not played for the Premier League leaders since September when he refused to warm up during a Champions League match and only returned last week from a three-month unauthorized absence at home. City coach Roberto Mancini had initially told Tevez he would never play for City again after his act of public insubordination, but later softened his stance and only asked for an apology. John Stones Jersey . -- Canadas Milos Raonic defeated Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France on Saturday to advance to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open.On Thursday night Jason Jarvis was the star and now the Goldeyes are only a game-and-a-half out of the lead in the American Associations wild card hunt. For the third straight night at Midway Stadium in St. Paul, the Winnipeg Goldeyes shut out the St. Paul Saints. This time, in the final game of a four-game series, Jarvis gave up only five hits as the Goldeyes beat the Saints 3-0 to win their third straight game in St. Paul and win the four-game series 3-1. After losing 14-1 in the series opener, the Goldeyes pitchers went lights out on St. Paul. Chris Salamida, Matt Rusch and Jarvis pitched 27 consecutive innings of shutout baseball. Its the first time the Goldeyes have ever gone back-to-back-to-back with complete game shutouts, or even three consecutive shutouts for that matter. “Our pitchers came out and threw strikes in the last two games and Jarvis just kept it going,” said Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea. “He pitched his butt off tonight. “No matter what level youre playing at, you dont see three complete game shutouts in a row. Thats something that just doesnt happen. Ill wager thats the first time its happened in league history. Its been amazing to watch.” With the victory, the Goldeyes improved to 49-41 on the season and pulled to within a game-and-a-half of the 50-39 Gary SouthShore RailCats. Gary lost 5-4 to Wichita Thursday afternoon. The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the second inning, as Ray Sadler walked, went to second on a single by Josh Mazzola and scored on a single by Luis Alen. Winnipeg made it 3-0 in the fourth on solo homers by Mazzola and Alen and that was it. Jarvis annd St.dddddddddddd Pauls Anthony Claggett were almost perfect for the rest of the game as both starters pitched complete games. “You cant pitch better than Jason has in his first two starts for us,” said Vermilyea, referring to the fact that Jarvis was acquired by the Goldeyes from Sioux City 10 days ago. “He works off that fastball and when he gets ahead he threw the slider and sinker ball and kept it in the bottom half of the zone. And you dont throw a shutout without a defense making plays behind him and our defense was great tonight.” Mazzola and Alen had outstanding games for the Goldeyes. Mazzola, went four-for-four, hit his 14th homer of the season, scored a run, drove in a run and raised his batting average to .294. Alen went two-for-four with a solo homer and an RBI single. The Goldeyes had only eight hits on the night, but they made only one error in the entire four-game series. Jarvis (6-10, 3.85 ERA) picked up the win, his first as a member of the Goldeyes. Claggett (8-5, 3.26 ERA) suffered the loss for St. Paul. Right after the game, the Goldeyes jumped on the bus and headed for Sioux Falls, S.D. where theyll open a three-game weekend series against the Sioux Falls Canaries on Friday night. The game can be heard live on TSN 1290, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:30 p.m. Winnipeg will head home on Monday and open a four-game series against St. Paul on Tuesday night at Shaw Park. Tickets for all Goldeyes games are available through Ticketmaster by calling 1-855-GOLDEYE, clicking on Ticketmaster.ca or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office. ' ' ' would you rule out USA narrowly beating Germany in the last games to eliminate Portugal on goal difference? Germany 4 - Portugal 0 - Germany were thought to be rusty, hit by key injuries and potentially vulnerable. Forced into a back four of centre-backs, Bastian Schweinsteiger fit only for the bench and no Marco Reus. No problem. - When a team is this tactically intelligent, it is an absolute joy to watch a team play with a "false nine." With an organized, narrow back four (made up of four centre-backs) and two excellent central midfielders in Philipp Lahm and Sami Khedira, the front four of Germany were magnificent with their movement. - Much like against England four years ago, Germany were happy to overload in wide areas. It is one thing to overload, but it is quite another to have the skill, cohesion and understanding of movement to turn it into a strength. - The important thing here is to watch the positioning of the opposing back four. My colleague, and proud member of the centre-backs union Jason De Vos, always says you dont want to get dragged outside the width of the 18-yard box. Not only are Germany masters at doing that, but they drag the other centre-back on the outside of it as well! - Cast your mind back to World Cup 2010 and the last 16 game when Germany beat England 4-1. On the second goal,, their buildup play led to Englands back four looking like a shambles.dddddddddddd. - False nine or no false nine, it is about movement. That is Miroslav Klose, as a striker, on the touchline. He receives the ball and sends Thomas Mueller into space and the German on the far left, Lukas Podolski, scores the goal. - Fast forward to the opening goal of Mondays match. It is brilliant movement from Germany to create the opening that led to Joao Pereira fouling Mario Gotze in the box. - Initially, Portugal look more than organized to deal with the threat with as many as eight players active and alert to an attack. The two centre-backs are occupied - Pepe by Gotze and on the far side Bruno Alves on Sami Khedira. - Then, Germany creates another bit of magic on the flank and the key move is from deep as Mesut Ozil finds space, crucially, dragging Pepe further over allowing Gotze with more than enough room away from Pereira... - Thats why, on the tactical view, Portugal look like a defensive shambles with their back four, similar to England four years ago. - The biggest story of the game came in the 36th minute when Pepe stupidly let his team down by reacting angrily to a flop by Muller. The Real Madrid man took exception to Mullers antics and his headbutt was idiotic. - All in all, it was pretty much the worst possible day for Portugal who need to work on getting service to Cristiano Ronaldo. Expect the magician Joao Moutinho to get far more involved in their next two matches. Iran 0 - 0 Nigeria - The 13th game of the tournament proved to be unlucky as two very average sides played out a game that wouldnt have looked out of place in the third tier of English football. - At least the atmosphere looked good. - Massive missed opportunity for Nigeria who now will have to beat Bosnia-Herzegovina to get to the last 16. Man of the Day: Nominees: - Philipp Lahm – He moved into midfield and was equally as brilliant for Germany than he was for Bayern Munich this past season. - Sami Khedira – Some were worried if he would be 100 per cent as he fights back from a long-term injury, but the midfielder, alongside Lahm, was magnificent. - Thomas Muller – Mr. Golden Boot now has as many goals at World Cups as Diego Maradona. - John Brooks – Move over, Garth. America has a new Brooks. - Clint Dempsey – It was a perfect start for the Americans as the Seattle man breezed into the box and ignited their World Cup campaign. And the winner is... Thomas Muller – His goals were brilliant, showing all of his strengths. He wanted the penalty and told Ozil so right before it and then bullied his way to the ball on the other two. At 24, he could still have two more World Cups to come. What comes next? - Belgium vs. Algeria (12pm et/9am pt) - Brazil vs. Mexico (3pm et/12pm pt) - Russia vs. Korea Republic (6pm et /3pm et) Burning question for tomorrow: Can Brazil find another gear in what is likely their last real competitive test before the knockout stages? Key stat for Day 5: We have now had 11 headed goals already at the World Cup. ' ' '
